Tumble dryer

Hi

Having returned from the US and having the joy of getting clothes dry in 20 minutes instead of my home looking like a laundry and paintwork chipping because of it I have decided my life needs a tumble dryer.

However my options are limited

  • garage is out (I think) as condenser dryer and it is both too cold and only place is next too freezer
  • laundry doesn't have room without losing cupboard space unless it's a v thin one
  • I can replace washer with a washer dryer
  • kitchen out as no free space as few cupboards on floor anyway.

Am I missing something? Any help appreciated (I really don't want a heated airer though!).

lose cupboard space in the laundry and put a modern heat sink condenser dryer in (no emptying, no damp). Put in more shelvesto replace list cupboard. or move cupboard d contents to garage. voilà.

mines a Siemens one - quite expensive but v good. Most important thing with dryers IMO is but mid or top range. The cheap ones are shit and don't last - false economy.

Is there space to stack it on top of the washing machine in the laundry? Agree with foragogo our Siemens one is still going after 9 years. Had an engineer out once. Learn where all your filters are and empty them regularly.

you could put a vented drier in the garage. Vented driers, being much simpler than condensors, are cheaper to buy and have less to go wrong.

A core drill to make a neat round hole in the wall is at the tool hire shop, or most plumbers or jobbing builders will have one. They are rather heavy. It needs a plastic duct in the wall and a cowl vent. If you go that route, make any extractor holes in your kitchen, bathroom and utility at the same time to save late effort and expense.

Heat pump driers are still rather expensive, though economical to run.

Ok so builder said we can have vented one in laundry (lovely of him to answer emails on Sunday). DH has agreed to lose cupboardor we can stack on washer (albeit losing shelf and window light).

I was looking at Miele but will look at Siemens now. Any particular model?

Meant to add too that I appreciate all the advice. I am so excited at the prospect of a winter without spending my day moving clothes on radiators!

New Bosch and Siemens dryers don't reverese, so they can often tangle things up. Especially bedsheets. Miele would be the better choice.

MsGee · 04/11/2015 16:09

Thanks. We are taking advice and going for a vented one. Can anyone suggest a decent model? Siemens and Miele don't seem to do so many vented ones so struggling to find one online.

I honestly think with dryers, the more basic the better. Less to go wrong. The bog standard reversing White Knight, Indesit & Hotpoint dryers are great!

We had a Hotpoint tumble dryer for 15 years and have just replaced it with this Beko one. It is absolutely, bloody brilliant.

It has a large drum capacity so it dries a lot, but not just that because there's a lot of room the laundry comes out a lot less creased than it did in the Hotpoint. It's got a sensor on it so it stops when it's dry. The only thing that's had to go in again has been a hoody with a really thick hood. It generally takes about 40 minutes for a load.

We looked at Miele, Bosch and Siemens, and when we weighed up the price difference we couldn't honestly see where we'd gain. One Miele was 10x the price, I honestly don't think it would last 10x as long.

I can't recommend ao.com enough, btw. We paid £4.99 for Sunday delivery and they took the old dryer away for free.
