My utility room smells ... what can it be??

the utility room houses the washer, tumble dryer and my ever increasing pile of ironing - but it is generally clean and tidy. Last night after using the dryer there was a faint wiff, this morning it stinks in there!! really strong cabbage type smell. Any ideas?
I daren't go in there now as DH said it could be something dead
not one of the kids, a mouse

sometimes my washing machine smells, someone posted on here recently as to what it was, hmm, can't remember really, perhaps to do with changing a filter? If washing machines have filters???!!

shouldbedeckingthehalls · 06/12/2006 09:21

our utility room developed a smell a few months ago which turned out to be a problem with the extrator hose from the tumble dryer- it had a tiny kink so some water had been trapped and had been sitting there for some time slowing getting smelly- after quickly pulling and re-straightening the hose the smell soon disappeared.
Hope it's something as simple as this for you and not something dead!

littlemissbossy · 06/12/2006 09:22

no buckets, cloths etc in there, just laundry
washing machine has recently been serviced/repaired so I don't think it's that - it's either the dryer or there really is something dead in there, I'm too scared to investigate in case I find a mouse

Is your dirty washing basket in there too? if so you could have put something wet (maybe that you've soaked before hand) and put it in the pile instead of the washing machine and forgetting about it allowing it to fester?

littlemissbossy · 06/12/2006 09:23

also no dirty washing only the clean stuff

HuwEdwards · 06/12/2006 09:26

Is the pipe to your washing machine twisted at all, thereby leeting water drain back into your machine - happened to us once.

littlemissbossy · 06/12/2006 09:27

I'm too scared, LOL what a chicken I am
we've had mice before so it really could be that

Could somebody have carried a vegetable in there? Rotting potatoes are the worst.

cupcakes · 06/12/2006 10:37

a dead mouse isn't that awful though, is it?
On the way to school yesterday there was a dead bird on the pavement which some animal (presumably a cat) had half eaten. Now, that has to be worse than a mouse (which will only get worse the longer you leave it...)

I think it's always worse when they're alive.

Come on - chin up...

littlemissbossy · 06/12/2006 10:44

it still stinks
can't think it's food, it is actually quite clean in there, have spoken to DH and will wait for him to get home and 'deal' with it
I'm usually quite good and would handle these things myself, but I'm terrified of mice LOL

I think it's probably your drier hose - I don't think dead mice smell of cabbage but old dirty water does.

HuwEdwards · 06/12/2006 10:49

stick your head in the washer and the drier - is the smell coming from inside either of them?

littlemissbossy · 06/12/2006 10:53

can't smell anything inside the washer or the dryer and no smell coming directly from hose either - it's a mystery!

OP posts:
WonderCod · 06/12/2006 10:54

HuwEdwards · 06/12/2006 10:54

WonderCod · 06/12/2006 10:57

lol

HuwEdwards · 06/12/2006 10:58

ok, back to serious investigation.

could it be a drain outside the utility?

littlemissbossy · 06/12/2006 11:00

there is a drain pipe outside the utility but the smell is definately from inside the room
I've opened the window but closed the door so it doesn't waft into the rest of the house
