Me and the Dyson - it's over

I'm fucking through with it. Weighs a ton, elasticated hose thing you need the strength of 10 men to stop it concertina-ing itself back together. Clipping all the attachments in and out that never quite catch first time so it's constantly dismantling itself. I've fucking had enough. Will it die if I throw it down the stairs?

rabbit I had never heard of that!! And that there is why I love mn you guys!

TPel · 27/10/2015 22:35

Another Sebo convert from Dyson. I won't be going back!

ouryve · 27/10/2015 22:36

I can't go back to any sort of vacuum cleaner that isn't an upright. My back is not at all enamoured of the cylinder type and similar. At least with an upright, you can just walk with it and not hurt your back.

Though the Dyson Ball we have that eventually replaced the dyson I oculdn't carry up the stairs tends to dislocate my fingers (I have hypermobility syndrome) so isn't great. I've been seriously considering a nice solid Sebo when it eventually pings apart for the last time and DH can't put it al back together again.

Those who have one, is it any good for stairs? Or does it barely sniff at the first 8, then fall over, like the electrolux I tried, about 18 years ago, before my run of Dysons?

ouryve · 27/10/2015 22:39

That said, our DC 24 was bough from Comet, before it went bust - it feels like a new machine, compared with the DC14 it replaced, but isn't. And the bugger will probably half work for the next 4 years.

Dulceetdecorum · 27/10/2015 22:51

The pet Sebo comes with a separate extra long hose so it can do stairs easily. You can also buy the hose separately.

ouryve · 27/10/2015 22:53

Right. That's the one I'm showing pictures of to my little Dyson, next time it misbehaves or I really need to vacuum the stairs (it has a really short hose, which was not made clear when we bought it - just as well it's lightweight)

Here you go, Flumplet. The Henry Xtra comes with this as standard. It's perfect for carpets.

Very happy with my Sebo. It's 13 years old and survived a house extension. It still works great.

Notgrumpyjustquiet · 28/10/2015 22:58

What I need is something that can do stairs and upstairs carpets without me losing my temper, plus corners, curtains and cobwebs downstairs so really I'm thinking a cylinder of some sort will do? And surely I wouldn't need to spend a fortune. No pets at present although OH keeps threatening to allow me to get a couple of cats. Then... scrub up the fucking Dyson and flog it on the eBay/ Gumtree, yes?

Notgrumpyjustquiet, cylinders can be even more of a pain than uprights, especially on carpet. If you have all hard floors, they're fine, but if you have carpets, make sure you choose a cylinder that has a turbo brush. Miele Cat & Dog, Henry Xtra or Sebo K1 Pet/E1 Pet. Even though you don't have pets, the turbo brush will make it SO much easier to use on carpet - better pick up and it won't stick to the floor so much when you're using it.

Whilst you could get a cheap vac and manage with that, it might be better to get something decent that will last. Our Sebo is 20 years old and by far out cleaned the Dyson we got to replace it (that later went to charity since we shoved it in the shed and went back to the Sebo).

rabbit123 · 29/10/2015 08:30

Reasonably priced Cat & Dog here. Also still much cheaper than a Dyson.

I keep an old (and a great basic LG - no longer available AFAIK) upstairs and the new heavy sebo downstairs.

SewingAndCakes · 29/10/2015 08:37

I've just ordered a Dyson to replace my Harry cylinder vacuum; it just didn't do the job very well (I have dogs and a cat and the Aero brush clogged and broke quickly). I have found upright cleaners far better for carpets so I'm hoping this Dyson will help. Dh has gone on and on about Dysons being good (based on what I have no idea Hmm). I'm keeping the Harry for diy/car cleaning now.

Pancakeflipper · 29/10/2015 08:53

According to my DP who knows nothing of interest domestic wise, is Dyson went downhill when they outsourced the manufacturing to China.

But we worship at the vac of Sebo in our household.. Had one for 11yrs. Survived massive house rebuild where was abused by the builders and filled with plaster board daily. I love it's carpets stripes.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/10/2015 09:00

I also hate the plasticky piles of crap that are Dysons

Plus I hate James Dysons waving his "I'm a grey British institution" badge when he's closed all his uk manufacturing operations sacrificing God knows how many uk jobs.

Plus, doesn't it make you suspicious when one of a company's main selling points is how good the repairs are?

No, I'm SEBO all the way here

Scoobydoo8 · 29/10/2015 09:01

Also I added extra flex to my LG so it can do whole of upstairs and right down to the hall. Worth doing.
