Just put quarter of a capful of Dettol in with a load of laundry ...

Is everything going to be alright?

Will it stink of Dettol when it comes out in 2 hours?

I'm doing it because Mumsnet told me to.

I just tried the white vinegar on the minging squash stuff (utility room looks like I've been making George's Marvellous Medicine) - soaked it in 50/50 vinegar/water for half an hour, followed by normal 40deg wash, hey presto no more ming! Exciting times chez moreshit!

I thought vinegar (acid) was supposed to be good for cleaning the limescale (alkaline) out of washing machines.

Why is it good for cleaning clothes, anyone know?

I soak dh's smelly socks overnight in a bucket of disinfectant - rinse - then pop in the normal wash.

BertieBotts · 17/10/2015 21:21

I used to put vinegar in my washes and it never made the clothes smell of vinegar. On the contrary it seemed to heighten the perfume of the normal powder and make everything smell fresher.

Colour powder lacks the bleach(ing agents) that other powders contain.

BertieBotts · 17/10/2015 21:22

I don't know how it works but it does. It's a good cleaning agent in general. Great on windows and mirrors :)

SurferJet · 17/10/2015 21:23

I soak stains in soda crystals.

wigglybeezer · 17/10/2015 21:27

My MIL used to put Dettol in DH's bath water when he was little, she was a bit germ phobic!

BertieBotts · 17/10/2015 21:29

There was always that one kid in infant school who always smelled of TCP Grin

tshirtsuntan · 17/10/2015 21:32

kp86 washing machines are all cold fill now, no need to connect hot water the machine heats the water.

expatinscotland · 17/10/2015 21:36

Should be fine. I've put a capful of Zoflora in the fabric softener if DH's work uniform is extra smelly in summer and it comes out fine.

thecapitalsunited · 17/10/2015 22:11

Mintyy, I think white vinegar is antibacterial so thats probably why it gets rid of nasty smells from gym kit and manky armpits on my husband's t-shirts.

Ktay · 17/10/2015 22:11

No point washing at 60 with a bio powder anyway - the enzymes that get the clothes clean are destroyed at high temperatures

Tarzanlovesgaby · 17/10/2015 22:15

ktay
nah, until the water is too hot for the enzymes they can work just fine. and then there is the 'soap' part of the detergent as well that then takes over.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 17/10/2015 22:16

Creeping in to tell you all that merino sportswear is breathable and doesn't get smelly...

Ktay · 17/10/2015 22:28

Oh ok, I stand corrected...

Mintyy · 17/10/2015 22:29

I didn't want bleaching as it was a colours wash.

I use the dettol laundry cleanser to get rid of wee smells on children's bedding and sweat smells on sports kit. I used to use normal dettol but the laundry one smells better and a big bottle is only £3 at home bargains which is the same price as a small bottle of Normal dettol in the supermarket.

magpieC · 17/10/2015 22:35

Halo Sports Wash is still available from Sainsburys... (and Amazon). It's great for damp/sports smells!

KP86 · 17/10/2015 22:46

My top loader machine back in Aus (currently in storage) has both hot and cold taps.

But for our front loader washer/dryer in the flat here we just leave it on 0 deg water for most washes. Hopefully that means tap temp and isn't actually cooling it down, haha!

We also don't have bio powder at home, so curious to know if it actually makes a difference...

Chanatan · 18/10/2015 06:04

I used the dettol anti bacteria liquid and yes it did work but with 5 adults in the house I soon found it a bit pricey so experimented with the value disenfectant the supermarkets sell,2 capfuls in with th main wash and all sweat smells disappear and at about 30p a bottle its a cheap way of doing it.

verystressedmum · 27/10/2015 08:21

I use the tesco own brand dettol stuff when I wash the dogs bedding, on a 90 wash. No idea what it does but it makes me feel better.

Pipbin · 27/10/2015 08:29

I put Zoflora in with my stinking gym kit but it still stinks. I will try soaking next.

murphys · 27/10/2015 08:30

Same here in SA KP. Most top loaders just have the hot and cold tap connections, so most people just do a cold wash. I have filled up a good few top loaders with hot water in a bucket from the tap Wink when cold just wouldn't do the job....

And we don't have non-bio/bio either, so we just have washing powder or liquid.

And Dettol has been added into bath water for years....and still is... if the dc have been playing outside all day and are all scraped and scratched and the toes are bleeding as they rode their bike with no shoes on and used said feet for brakes, a good dollop of Dettol in the bath is normal that night. I don't think that is odd. Lot of kids have Dettol in the bath here.....

ifitsnotanarse · 27/10/2015 22:38

I use Savlon to get rid of wee smells - just slosh some in. There is a faint smell but better than wee. Grin
