Really stoopid question about hand washing clothes

The washing machine has died and the engineer isn't coming to revive it for over a week (didn't mention that in the extended guarantee!) so I'm going to need to hand wash some stuff. I've never done it before so is it just adding washing powder to water, rubbing the clothes somewhat, rinsing in clean water, wringing and hanging to dry?
I've had to fabreeze the dc's uniforms and hope for the best but need to get the second sets done and dried for tomorrow (which is more fun as my heating isn't working either but that's another thread)

Get hand washing powder and put in the water first put a bit on any stains. Stick in sink and swish round and leave to soak, rub any marks etc . Then rinse untilo teh water is clean and no more soap. Wring out if its wool then put between 2 towels and 'roll' out the water. Then wool dry flat others hand as normal.

Having previously hand washed clothes in the bath I'd recommend you visit a launderette if there's one anywhere near by! Or a friend/neighbour willing to let you use a cycle of their machine in exchange for a bit of cash/cake/bottle of wine

Laundrette?

Fairygodfucker · 05/10/2015 10:01

Unfortunately there are no launderettes around here. Despite living here for the past 8yrs I still don't know anyone and family are several hours drive away. I'm buying new underwear/socks so it's just the uniforms. We should be fine for the rest for the week and I can always go to family at the weekend it's just the uniforms for this week.

If they're the sort of fabric that suits a soft wash (sorry I don't know the technical term for it) is there no way that you all can just grit it out and then give the uniforms a couple of washes at the weekend ? There's little or no decent drying weather around at the moment and if you have no heating, I would have thought your chances of having anything dry and ready for tomorrow are pretty limited.
