Stove top kettle

I'm getting an induction hob and gave been wondering about getting a stove top kettle, rather than having a standalone one on the worktop. Having had a look online I'm finding it hard to decide on one. John Lewis has some eye-wateringly expensive ones (although I love the look of the Alessi one with the bird whistle, but can't justify £99), and Argos/Amazon have some dirt-cheap ones from £7 which don't sound great quality. Does anyone have any recommendations?

We have a Le Creuset one (the old, cone-shaped style) which was probably eye-wateringly expensive too, but was a Christmas present from PILs a few years ago. Love it!

I've got a no brand cheapy one with no whistle but I keep it at the back or the log oven all the time so don't want it whistling at me all day. I've had it five yrs but only use it about seven months a yr.

Thanks for the replies. Is the Le Creuset one heavy? Do the handles heat up on either of them?

Is yours the kind of house where people make their own tea? This is why I decided against one, all of the times I'd need to get up and explain how it works/make it for them...

Seeing that in black and white makes me feel much lazier than when I just thought it and bought a freestanding one!

I had one. Was bloody nightmare. Amount of times I stuck the kettle on and popped upstairs only to forget but also had radio/ TV on and didn't hear the whistling.

we actually got one from wilkos. it's alright but the handle broke off the lid, so probably wise not to trust the cheap ones! the handle never gets too hot to hold though and otherwise it works fine, so I reckon if you spend twenty quid or so you'll get something decent. ours is a truly delightful shade of lime green also, a real treat for the eyes... We have a Le Cruseut too - ebay £35, second hand but like like new. We love it. Yes, it's heavy, but it looks so darn good on my range cooker. We had electric for years and only converted to stove top about a month ago but I much prefer it from a looks / cleaning / space saving point of view!

Hereslookingatchoo · 24/09/2015 09:44

Oh and no, the handles don't heat up on le Cruseut. It is heavy, but I do have stupidly weak wrists.

Mine was from Homesense (TK Maxx) and has a whistle. Love it. Its great not having cables everywhere.

Sinkingfeeling · 24/09/2015 19:53

I guess the Le Creuset kettle is heavier than most (like the saucepans and casserole dishes), but I don't really find it a problem. Love the whistle, but simple things please me a lot. Brew

Handle gets hot but I can have on the back corner of the oven 10 plus hrs a day I doubt it would be an issue with normal use.

We've got a Sage by Heston tea machine and it's brilliant. I got it a year ago half price and it was still £100! It makes the tea for you, no need to be around to pour water into teapot, it keeps it hot, the handle doesn't get hot, it will make tea at a set time. DH had stopped tea duty because he couldn't pick up the teapot because of the hot handle and couldn't manoeuvre it with the tea cosy round it (he has Parkinsons). Now he participates fully in the household tea programme

I moved to a place with an aga and my mum dug out of the garage my grandmothers old tin metal one. I love it! They just don't make those ones anymore.
