Does washing at 30 degrees clean the clothes?

Just wondering really. I normally wash colours and darks at 40 and whites at 60.

If I change all except whites to 30 will it make any difference?

boring thread if the day winner

I wash most clothes at 30, but never with the short wash.

what gets fabrics clean is agitation (swishing around in the drum) and a good rinse gets rid of the dirt and soap residue.

and use bio powder, colour version for darks.

Ooohhh I seem to have opened a can of worms! Grin

Piglet john....where do I put the soda crystals and how much do I add?

Thanks everyone

in the soap drawer

To clean it, about a cupful.

To add to powder, about a quarter cup.

Instructions are on the bag anyway.

I started to wash everything at 30 but my 1 year olds clothes don't get clean at that so had to go back to 40. She is especially mucky tho!

Glasspumpkin · 23/09/2015 13:30

I wash all socks, pants, flannels, bedding and towels on 60 to kill bacteria.

I add soda crystals to every wash apart from black clothes unless it's socks.

Clothes I generally wash on 40 or 50 if covered in mud for instance.

I will only wash something on 30 and on a quick wash if I've just put it on and spilt something on it and don't want it to stain

rabbit123 · 23/09/2015 13:37

Body temperature is 37 degrees. A temperature hotter than that is needed to kill bacteria caused by sweat and other bodily functions. These Bactria won't kill you and wouldn't make you ill, but washing on 30 creates a warm, damp atmosphere in the drum, which causes these bacteria to multiply in excess. That's when it becomes a health risk.

KissingFish · 23/09/2015 13:46

I chuck everything in together, no sorting into colours or kinds of washing, and wash at 30. It all smells and looks clean when it comes out.

Dog bedding and dog towels get a good hot wash because they stink!

wasabipeanut · 23/09/2015 13:47

40 for mixed loads, 60 for sheets and whites, pants & socks, 90 for flannels, towels, tea towels, cleaning cloths etc. I love the smell of a really hot wash.

I use non bio powder but always add about a tbsp of soda crystals. No fabric softener - liquids in a washer just gunk it up.

I do things like wool at 20 or 30 but wouldn't dream of using that temp regularly.

yeOldeTrout · 23/09/2015 13:47

folk who haven't tried washing at 30 should try it & come back here to report results

Mintyy · 23/09/2015 13:52

Something I learned on Mn, and was utterly shocked by (infact I can't quite get over it) is that in Australia everyone does their laundry in cold water. I just don't understand how that works.

NerrSnerr · 23/09/2015 13:57

I wash everything at 30 using non bio. I don't think we stink. Soz if you're ever near me and we do.

StrapOnDodo · 23/09/2015 14:01

I thought cottons like jersey tops would shrink above 40? I wash everything at 40, except towels at 60 and I nuke the dog bedding at 95.

diggerdigsdogs · 23/09/2015 14:02

Eh Mintyy? I'm in Aus and I don't think that's the case!

I have a normal Miele washing machine and wash at a range of temperatures.

Top loaders are very popular though and they are frankly shit.

rabbit123 · 23/09/2015 14:37

mintyy, you can get specially formulated detergents for cold washing in Aus. They're not sold in the UK though.

Boosiehs · 23/09/2015 14:43

I wash at 40 - generally. Separate darks and lights but chuck in a shake of Napisan to kill off any bacteria.

Napisan is the dogs bananas. Especially for shitty baby vests.

Oh and run a hot washing cleaning cycle with cleaning crystals once in a while.

fussychica · 24/09/2015 23:23

Mainly 40 for coloureds, 50 or 60 for whites. 30 short wash for delicates/worn once. Use bio powder tablets from Aldi - brilliant and add soda crystals to white washes. Fannels are the work of the devilGrin

wowfudge · 25/09/2015 00:05

Does washing detergent not kill bacteria then? Our stuff doesn't stink although I wash everything apart from towels at 30. Plus I tumble dry nearly everything so maybe that helps?

Tarzanlovesgaby · 25/09/2015 07:18

no, but it removes the bacteria's food.

BoboChic · 25/09/2015 07:20

30 is OK from time to time but if you only ever wash at 30 your clothes and machine will be gross.

Underclothes should be washed at 40 minimum.

JassyRadlett · 25/09/2015 07:24

Soap.

TheStripyGruffalo · 25/09/2015 07:24

I wash everything at 30 to save money on the gas and electricity bill since I have to wash my work clothes every day. They come out clean and fresh.

JassyRadlett · 25/09/2015 07:25

Out of interest - at what temperature is the water people wash their hands in after the loo?

Savagebeauty · 25/09/2015 07:29

I wash everything on 30, towels and bedding on 40.
I wash clothes after every wear .

wowfudge · 25/09/2015 08:03

Well I've been washing at 30 for five years and not gross so far! As I have stated, I wash towels at 60 every week. Only ever had to clean the machine once, after a short spell using liquid detergent.

The majority of bacteria aren't harmful anyway.

Trills · 25/09/2015 08:08

My clothes look and smell fine washed at 30.

My definition of "clean" for clothes is "do they look and smell OK?".

So, er, yes.
