I have just got a new oak blanket box, all my bedding is coming out not smelling very nice, i don't like the smell of lavender, is there anything else i can use?

Try putting a bowl of bicarb (to absorb the smell) in the empty box with the lid closed for a week and see what it smells like then. Or leave it empty with the lid open for a week and see if the smell has dissipated

You can get drawer liners in different scents and you could line the base with them - TK Maxx and Laura Ashley sell them or scented sachets. Not all of them are lavender scented or filled.

do you think it is a smell of wood, or glue, or oil?

Could it have got damp?

pigletJohn

I am afraid i have no idea how to tell the difference between wood or oil.

It doesn't smell like any glue I know, but i don't spend much time sniffing wood glue :)
Actually typing this I have decided it must be oil, as it doesn't smell like a wood shop either.

still to piglet
it could be damp, as other really old drawers in my house make stuff smell the same, but as i don't spend 8 hours with them wrapped round my head I don't care as much.

cedar wood balls are nice in a blanket box

would a few little bags of bicarb work? like little lavendar bags, as i really don't have anywhere to store the king size winter duvet in the box.

Could you not just stick it under or on top of a bed for a week or in a large plastic bag? Bicarb will leak through fabric bags as it's very fine. If the fabric is dense and stops this it will negate the effect of the bicarb, which is why I suggested a bowl of it. You could stick a bowl of bicarb on top of everything in the box - just thought it would be better to try to get rid of the smell from the box when it is empty.

I wanted to suggest cedar wood. you can get a board cut to size in a dyi shop and place it at the bottom.

I have a couple of cedar shelf boards in my wardrobe. makes it smell lovely.

but if it is the oil applyed to the wood the smell wouldn't be gone in a week would it?
Thanks for the extra info.

I can only think if putting it outside, with the lid open, on sunny days.

There is a faint chance it might be some kind of preservative against insects, but I am guessing a treatment for the wood like stain, wax, oil or varnish (but oak is not usually varnished)

Airing it will dry out any solvent in the treatment.

They were only suggestions - anything in the box with only serve to trap the smell in there for longer.
