Home Delivery = Late Delivery

We've used ASDA's online grocery shop for over a year now and apart from a couple of small mistakes have never had cause to complain. But in recent weeks it is becoming a regular thing that the shopping is being delivered late. The first time it happened I chalked it up to being the end of the month - the majority of people get paid, they order their groceries for the month. But waiting for three hours on a Saturday (one hour past the end of our delivery slot) for my food to be delivered is ridiculous.

So here's what I've come up with. Since the introduction of the Carrier Bag charge online shops have put in an option to not use the bags and instead place all you products in the plastic crates and bring them to your door. I don't know how many of you out there use that option but for those unfamiliar - it consists of you carrying every single thing from your front door to the kitchen - fortunately we don't live in a block of flats. Policy says that they aren't supposed to deliver to your door if there is no lift.

To conclude the time taken transporting your items indoors is taking up the time drivers spend going from one house to another and as a result making most of us wait hours for our delivery.

The question is have the shops considered this and if so what do they plan to do about it?

I think you need to shop around. We have always had "bagless" delivery from Tesco and carried the crates through ourselves, but the drivers have regularly offered to carry them through. We've had maybe 2 deliveries outside the 1 hour window in the last year or so, and both times I was texted within the window and they were no more than 20 mins late.

When I use Tesco delivery I take the whole crate through to the kitchen, quickly take the things out onto the worktop and go back to the door for the next crate. doesn't take me much longer really.

Tesco bring them right into the kitchen for you. They're not perfect (we've moved and local store seems to be a bit crap at checking dates) but the customer service line is good and they are very quick to refund when there is an issue.

I have never waited 3 hours! ever. I wouldn't either. Ocado are on time every time, week in, week out and have been since I started using them. If they want to deliver early they call ahead. Currently the system is that you give your used bags back and they recycle them.

I did have a bag-less tesco order once and the delivery man carried it into the kitchen for me, it took seconds to unpack. Nope, ASDA are just crap, not the first time I have heard this either.

Ocado - late once in a blue moon, sometimes early, but only if they have called you and checked if it's ok. 1 hour slot. Very rarely run out of things and the few substitutes we've had have been sensible.

FeelingSmurfy · 07/09/2015 14:15

A driver once told me that they have an extra 2 minutes for a bagless delivery but with a big shop it takes a lot more than 2 minutes longer to take every item out singly rather than bags full of stuff

Thanks for the replies.

I like ASDA. I wouldn't shop elsewhere (except maybe Aldi and Lidl). The driver who was an hour late did apologise and explain that the phone he had had died and therefore couldn't reach us.

We have ordered a few times from Iceland and they always bring them in bags free of charge. So I don't see why other shops cant do that - even adding the fee to delivery costs or something.

When ASDA comes we do take the crates in but it doesn't save us much time. It can still be up to five minutes going back and forth. I can't imagine how much hassle it must be for people on their own.

I'm not hugely annoyed that I'll switch to another shop because ASDA are the cheapest I've found and have great own brand products. I'm just miffed that more hasn't been done to ensure deliveries are on time. It sounds like Tesco have their heads on straight so what are they doing different to ASDA?

I don't know why I'm asking because they're way to expensive but... has anyone tried ordering from Morrison's online?

Morrisons online is fulfilled by Ocado (I think). You get Morrisons stuff, but it should be coming from a central warehouse and done by pros.

scribblegirl · 07/09/2015 19:22

I do delivery with bags, but it's Sainsburys (who do price check with Asda!) and they pick up the bags next time around - seems like the best compromise IMO

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 07/09/2015 19:24

We get a bagless delivery. It takes seconds longer. The crates get brought to the kitchen (as bags used to) and it doesn't take long at all for me and driver to quickly put everything onto worktop.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 07/09/2015 19:48

Well it was an hour late not three wasn't it? The delivery slot is two hours so it's not late until the end of the slot.

I think being an hour late once in a year is not so bad and a few times a bit after the slot isn't so bad either. Just don't deliver if have to be somewhere.

Moreisnnogedag · 07/09/2015 20:02

Tesco never late round here and we carry crate to kitchen and dump out whilst he's getting other crate.

I miss ocado - they were by far and away the best
