How much fabric conditioner do you all use?

Just wondering as I see other people say that they don't use it but have to here as very hard water and things feel rough without. I only use a capful for say a 5kg wash but the bottle suggests using a little less. My Mum done my washing for me once, I noticed her just pouring it out the bottle into the draw, my clothes stank of the stuff!

None, very hard water area, clothes don't feel rough at all.

bettyberry · 04/09/2015 17:31

I use Ecover because the usual (comfort etc) absolutely honks and I hate the smell. Ecover isn't strong at all and I keep an empty softener bottle and mix it 50/50 with water then dose from that. It works just fine and clothes are not overpowering but soft enough.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 04/09/2015 17:33

softish water here but I hate feel of stuff without conditioner (except towels, never use it on them)

My washer takes 8kg & I usually put in 1½-2 capfuls. I generally use one for sensitive skin so it's not a strong scent, but pleasant.

iamaboveandBeyond · 04/09/2015 17:38

I stopped for ages, probably a few years. Started again purely for the smell (soft water area) - noticed clothes were smelling umm, dunno, something (?) without it unless they were very fresh

Tostartagain · 04/09/2015 17:43

I only use comfort blue or comfort pure for wools think all the others smell too strong.

if you use more than recommended, you will get an accumulation of wax on the clothes and sludging the machine. It is bad for towels and soft clothes. Hot wash with plain water and Washing Soda Crystals will clean it off.

If you want to be able to smell it, get two or more bottles of different flavours and change every week or so. The reason it doesn't smell strong to you is that your snout gets acclimatised to your usual variety.

PigletJohn · 04/09/2015 17:53

p.s.

hard water and soap powder make fabrics rough as you get a build-up of soap deposits. Washing Soda Crystals soften the water and dissolve soap better, so try that. You will probably find that even without powder, the machine foams up with the accumulation of old soap being washed out.

irregularegular · 04/09/2015 17:56

We don't use any. I always notice the smell on clothes that other people give us or have washed, and to be honest I find it unpleasantly overpowering.

LBOCS2 · 04/09/2015 18:01

None. DH tries to sneak it in, and gets annoyed when I don't use it.

PlymouthMaid1 · 04/09/2015 18:02

Never use the stuff. Don't understand why it is is necessary.

ChilliPeanut · 04/09/2015 18:04

I don't use it either. it never seems to make much difference in the occasions I have.

misscph1973 · 04/09/2015 18:08

I don't use it, it's full of phtalates that makes fish change sex and it's terrible for the environment. I use vinegar instead, that softens the water and rinses out soap residue, rather than leave a layer that builds up. The vinegar smell is gone by the time the clothes is dry.

BabyGanoush · 04/09/2015 21:24

Aftee 7 years of living in an area with very hard water and no conditioner, my towels are like planks Shock so a bit of conditioner makes it possible to fold them now Grin

Missingsleepandthecat · 04/09/2015 22:01

I'm guilty of pouring it in and eyeing it similar to OP's mum Blush
DS2 uses a tiny tiny spot and uses the cap as a guideline like I should probably do

TheOddity · 04/09/2015 22:06

I use just less than a cap for 5kg wash. Very hard water area here. I also do a cycle every couple of months with soda crystals and font get the build up problem that way. I also just like the smell as tend to buy budget washing powder which smells less obvious.

PigletJohn · 04/09/2015 22:56

BabyGanoush

I would be very grateful if you would give your towels a hot hot hot wash with no powder, no fabsoft, and a cup of washing soda crystals. Would you try it and let me know if it helps?

I think fabric conditioner is a bit like the stuff for your hair, if you don't use it then it just feels a bit dry not silky and soft Smile

BrandNewAndImproved · 05/09/2015 00:06

I use Asda two in one. I'm a convert where as before I was a washing powder snob.

For bedding I add a few of those scented beads, they smell lovely.

BrandNewAndImproved · 05/09/2015 00:06

If you don't tumble dry you probably need fc, I tumble dry and couldn't even smell the fc after.

lavendersun · 05/09/2015 08:05

I put my towels in the drier with drier balls - soft w/o FC.

MackerelOfFact · 05/09/2015 08:16

I used to be pretty slapdash with it and just pour a big glug in, but after spending a good hour recently cleaning the drawer etc out, I've started using half a capful diluted with a full capful of water. It doesn't smell as strong but clothes smell 'cleaner' if that makes sense.

DoreenLethal · 05/09/2015 08:19

Can't stand it - that stuff stinks.

You might not smell it but by heck, I can.

Marcipex · 05/09/2015 08:25

I've never used it since a scientist told me what it's made of.

hebihebi · 05/09/2015 08:32

I have a monster bottle of Downy fabric conditioner from Costco. I only use half or a third of a capful. I do like to get my towels a bit softer.

BabyGanoush · 05/09/2015 09:21

Soda crystals? Will keep an eye out for them (are they for sale in super markets?)

I don't use tumble dryer much as though I am not all that eco, I find the thought of the amount of electricity used shocking.

It seems so wasteful to use a dryer if you have a washing line and it's not raining.

So anyway, soda crystals or vinegar, must try. Though my towels are like planks, they are amazingly absorbent.

I have noticed that hotel towels never smell of Lenor, but have a light vinegary scent. Anyone else ever notice that?
