Mattress for bad back sufferer - which to buy / which to avoid?

I've got a bad back. Won't go into details! Has anyone bought a really good mattress or bed they'd recommend. Do you know, I am so desperate I am willing to pay a good price for it. Which types should I avoid? What are your opinions on the Tempur mattresses? I loved them but have read mixed reviews. DS jumped on our bed and DH is on the now dipped side. He's got a bad back now too!

best website for mattress questions

ggirl · 03/09/2015 18:45

email them with your queries , theyre really helpful and don't excpect you to buy from them

We have a tempur and it has done wonders for DHs bad back. Expensive but very much worth it. I love ours :)

I, personally, would avoid Tempur. We bought one as both myself and my partner have various aches - mine is mainly a lower back problem. I slept ok during the trial period, but after another couple of months it seemed to be taking longer and longer to get to sleep and I just gave up in the end. I think the problem with Tempur is the whole moulding to your body thing as I think in order to be comfortable I have to move throughout the night, with Tempur you kind of end up staying in one position for longer.
Just my opinion and I'm sure in varies depending on your problem!

Tempur (actually fake tempur) lover here

Louise43210 · 03/09/2015 19:32

That website is very thorough thank you ggirl. X. I have seen lots of negatives about Tempur. I loved it when I tried it but was only on it for 30 seconds. What is a fake Tempur InternationalEspionage?

Any other ideas please? Does it matter if I have a cheaper bed frame with a really decent mattress too?

The best bed we ever had was a Dunlopillo latex one which cost an absolute fortune (over £1000 about 25 years ago). It was wonderful but I dont think I'll be able to run to spending what it costs now on a similar bed. We've now got a pocket sprung mattress with memory foam topping and a sprung divan base - its a Sealy Owain. Great for Dh's bad back and my bad neck. That model has been replaced now, but they now do some similar models with a latex topping.

Yes I've heard latex is good thanks, will go and try.

A spring mattress with a memory foam topping might work. It is not as hot and squidgy as a Tempur. I have one like this.

Avoid tempur unless you like heat in bed, lovely and comfortable for the first few minutes though.

We bought our bed from an independent bed shop. We were in there over an hour, we were asked questions and then sent to try a few. Once we had chosen we had a lie down on it for about 20 minuets to check that it was still comfortable.

It is still ridiculously comfortable but I have googled and they don't make it any more.
