Have I completely fucked up re. washing temperature and synthetic fabrics

I have just put a duvet, pillow, tea towels, towel and a lab coat, all white, onto washes at 95 degrees celsius. Am I going to find that the synthetic duvet and pillow, and perhaps my lab coat, melted and/or shrunken when I go back in an hour? We've had silverfish recently and my lab coat potentially came into contact with pig intestine before washing, so I fear I spooked myself into using the 'boil' wash unnecessarily. I didn't realise it was only supposed to be used for cotton. Argh.

I can replace these things if all goes badly but I would appreciate it if someone could prime me for what to expect when I go back there... Confused

Tea towels, towel and lab coat probably ok, not so sure about a duvet and pillows Hmm

Impressed that your washing machine can hold such a big load Smile

It's two washing machines! And the drums were rather full with all that in.

Keep your fingers crossed, perhaps tumble drying the duvet and pillow will resurrect them?

I've never done that (more by luck than judgement but DH boiled an Aran jumper that I'd spent a year knitting...... It would have made a good placemat Angry

Or shrink them further Shock. You do mean the actual duvet and pillows and not just the covers? I think 95 degrees is hotter than anything really needs. I always do towels at 60.

Does the lab coat have poppers? These often melt in high temperatures.

I doubt any of it will have shrunk , maybe less than white though.

I've just had to redo a load of whites ( washed in Persil and machine not full) as they came out as dirty as they went in.

your pillows will probably go all lumpy and your duvet won't be too pleased either but the silverfish will be nice and clean if a bit dead

OhFuckWhatHaveIDone · 03/09/2015 15:10

It's all been dried now and the only thing that seems to have suffered is the pillow, which is a bit lumpy, and an old white bra I chucked in and then forgot about. I'm sure we can beat the pillow into its previous state though. Will find out whether the bra is dead or not later. The duvet was absolutely fine because it has seams (or whatever you'd call them - the lines you sew into something when using wadding, thank you GCSE Textiles) across it, holding the contents mostly in place.

I'm going to have to invest in an iron and ironing board before I can use my lab coat again, but I knew that already.

Thanks everyone!

Oh well - not bad at all. A lot of pillows go like that, no matter what temperature you wash them at. Good luck getting that back into shape.
