Can I put things like dried orange peel into a wood burner to get a nice smell?

Or will it be pointless as enclosed and everything will go up chimney?
or be bad for stove?

Don't see why it would be bad for stove, but not sure you'd smell much. Worth a try, I'd say.

Yes think you can and things like eucalpytus and rosemary. Not sure about the smell but I guess you could open the door a little afterwards which would probably release a bit of the smell into the room .

rosemary sounds nice - would make me hanker for some lamb though.

If you stove is burning efficiently you should not get any smell at all as the smells are organocompounds and will be vapourised

cupcakes · 29/11/2006 16:03

true - there is a lingering wood smell but I think that's just from when we open the door.
We've only had it a month and am still getting used to it. Am going to go and spend an hour now trying to get it to light...

cupcakes we used to have a little 'hearth'/lip type thing at the front of our wood burner and we used to put it on there. Used to heat up and smell lovely! Tbh if you put it inside I don't think you'll get much smell - just burning lol!

Unfortunatley in this house we have a hideous gas fire (hideous looking I mean) so no chance of a nice smell coming out of that!!!

Katymac · 29/11/2006 16:05

It shouldn't take an hour

How do ou do it?

cupcakes · 29/11/2006 16:11

ahhh - the lip! excellent idea.

It's taking ages at the moment to light - we have just bought a load of wood and I don't think it's dry enough. dh has been cutting it up very small for kindling but it's not taking as well as the prebagged kindling I had been buying recently.
Also, maybe it's the weather outside - there hasn't been much of a 'draw' from the chimney this week. Once it's warmed up it's great but initially it keeps going out and driving me mad.

layer of scrunched up newspaper (broadsheet works well, local rag goes out straight away ), layer of kindling. Once the kindling has taken and has been burning for about 10 minutes I add one log at a time (only takes about three at most).

OP posts:
Katymac · 29/11/2006 16:25

How big are your kindling?

cupcakes · 29/11/2006 16:51

about an inch wide.

I am getting so mad - it hasn't even had a chance to get to the kindling as the stupid newspaper won't light. I feel like I have been through half a box of matches.
stupid Sports and Appointment pages...

firelighters

cupcakes · 29/11/2006 16:55

I think that's the way to go. I have heard you can get scented ones for an extortionate price but I shall be going to ye olde local hardware shop.

OP posts:

pricey firelighters

OP posts:
Enid · 29/11/2006 17:15

feck that

spend the money on a diptique candle and bog standard fire lighters

Katymac · 29/11/2006 17:34

Buy firelighters for now

You need to keep all your butter papers & toilet rolls

Toilet rolls stuffed with newspaper is they way to go

Butter paper lights really well & burns hot

You need very little kindling of that size

I light a firelighter or some newspaper/toilet roll and pile on bits about the size of a paperback (pref pine offcuts from a manufacturers) and stack up some logs - close the door leaving the vents fully open & check back in 20 mins or so

It normally works

cupcakes · 29/11/2006 17:56

will definitely try that loo roll one. Thanks.
