September 2015 fledglings shine their sink and their lace up shoes and prepare for the new academic year ahead

Welcome to the September 2015 Fledgling Flying thread! Hang up your microfibre cloths and park your buckets here!!

[Sorry - I've namechanged again - but remain SC]

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of Flylady (minus cutesy language and a surfeit of e-mails) with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation (and Wine of course) along the way. (More info available here and here ) and here.

Humungous thanks to our previous thread leaders (nns relating to a planet and to a colour) for guiding us through the summer and keeping us sane throughout the holidays! Thanks Thanks

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach - and don't worry - we are all at different stages. Some of us (SC stares at feet) -are stuck at the decluttering stage after an embarrassingly long number of years Blush:

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

And those of you who have decluttered and are really enthusiastic can throw some detailed cleaning in to the mix as well!

This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck!

I'll join you in the sunshine, sand and sea, cantsee.

Boys have been deposited safely at their new schools. DS1 was very nervous but went in ok. DS2 was all excited, but had a wobble when we got there. His (young, male) teacher seems lovely and reassuring though.

I've also been swimming and am now undoing the good effect with Brew and Biscuit.

Eew at fruit disaster, AsTime. Fruit flies make my skin crawl.

NickNacks · 03/09/2015 13:05

Urgh! Very stressed. Just had to send a mindee home with a cut, possible hospital jobbie. Sad

BlueEyeshadow · 03/09/2015 19:47

Oh no! What a worry, NickNacks. Hope everything OK.

standclear · 03/09/2015 20:00

Hi all, hope everyone has had a good day!

[Rakes sand and distributes bean bags and stripey deck chairs in beach themed naughty corner, checks hammocks are secure, turns up "sound of crashing waves" cd and serves fruit cocktails in coconuts with umbrellas to all fledglings in need.]

I'm just dashing through with links for tomorrow. Have been out all day at org where I have volunteering slot, and will be there most of day tomorrow too. We are having a much-needed reorganisation before proceedings start properly again next week. (It's so much nicer and more fulfilling decluttering other people's mess!) Got home to find a stack of dd's work bks waiting to be covered with sticky-backed plastic so must go and do that now. But on the positive side, dh has cooked spag bol, emptied dishwasher and walked the dog [yay!]

Baby-step no. 4 for Fri 4th Sept 2015 is here. It's the one about writing the steps down on post-it notes which I personally think is pretty pointless and suggest you ignore! But up to you!

We are currently in Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room here. Don't be put off by the fact that the Flylady site is showing we are still in Zone 5 (August) if you access it through the 'Today' button. Trust me, we are definitely in Zone 1!!

For those Fledglings at this stage: here is the detailed cleaning list for Zone One.

Friday's mission (the last of the week!) is here 15 mins spent sweeping and hoovering Zone 1 (5 mins per area).

The daily focus for Friday is decluttering our purses, handbags and cars.

The habit for September is developing a before-bed routine here.

Summary of above (which updates itself automatically) is here: flight plan.

Reminders: here also updated daily.

The weekend beckons! Keep going everyone!

*

Oh no Nicknacks These things happen with little 'uns... I hope your charge is OK. Poor you. Sounds like you have had a very stressful day Wine Wine A belated happy birthday to your dd! And hope your boys first day back went well!

Ta for Brew Blue! Hope you and your boys survived their first day at new school and that all went well in the end !! To have a lovely teacher is a very good start!

Hope today went well for you and ds too Can'tsee!

And for your dd too Fizrim - think I saw a thread on here recently about the dilemmas involved in getting rid of soft toys ... .

Ta for fry up Greymalkin Well done with your lists (good that links are helping but thread deffo team effort!) and glad you are getting a tad more sleep than before!!

Wow Astimegoesby that is one impressive schedule!!

Encouraging wing flaps to everyone else! G'night all!

nicknacks hope mindee was alright, it is so frightening when other people's children get injured on our watch - I remember dreading climbing frames when I was taking dcs' friends out.
SC I always think uniform is designed to be hardwearing and dirty. Hope dog alright. Another rescue dog on our street - a friend's now got a 3 year old collie cross and is 48 hours in. She seems blissfully unaware that collies have a reputation. She is bringing him over tomorrow.

Well today went better than expected for a low achieving sort of day. Ds1 and dd went back to school and returned in goodish spirits and Lady Macbeth seemed to have found favour with teacher. Ds1 got his first GSCE banked (a high C but that was to be expected) in Science which he was very chuffed over I was not, merely resigned Ds2 did a bit of History and managed to bring a friend over to play Mario in the afternoon. My tooth still hurts but I've got some antibiotics in case it is turning funny and am otherwise dosed up with nurofen and codeine.

After much heavy breathing I managed to send off a form which had eluded me, having filled the entire thing in on the that email edit thing and then lost it. Gave up and used a biro and a stamp instead. There has been a very sad tragedy in the extended family which is making me try harder not to get upset about small things. So a fair bit of thinking about that today too Sad - a close cousin and very lovely aunt affected.

Still completely in limbo over ds2 and his schooling/places at school though. It is now getting quite frustrating not knowing what the position is. we will hopefully hear by middle of next week what is going on. Home ed football tomorrow and a party on Sat for home edders makes it a bit less frustrating.

CantSee4Looking · 03/09/2015 20:25

Ds is fine SC today he has eaten 2 breakfasts, lunch box stuff, after school snack and 2 teas. Seems he will be growing shortly Hmm

Ta da
rest.

Sorry you have had sad news *Knitting

NickNacks hope the mindee is ok and your nerves are settling after the shock

AsTimeGoesBy · 03/09/2015 20:50

Posting early tonight.

Sorry to hear about mindee *Nick, that must be a nightmare.

Nettles - sorry to hear DS2 is still not sorted out schoolwise, if he's anything like my DS the uncertainty is far worse for him than it is for me (and I don't cope very well with it).

Thanks for all the lovely links and detailed roundups SC - really appreciated. I haven't got back into zones and missions yet after a slack summer, but have done lots of tidying this week and sifted through several months worth of accumulated paperwork tonight. Making the post of the start of term lull in extra-curricular activities which all kick in again over the next couple of weeks, DS is at Scouts tonight though, got to go and get him in a minute.

I managed a good swish and swipe this morning (I know that's not what I intended for Thurs, but this week is all a jumble and it needed doing more badly than upstairs vacuuming).

Fizrim · 03/09/2015 22:49

nick hope the mindee is OK. grey hope the softplay was quiet!

I now have a club tropicana earworm thanks to the beach theme. Did more tidying today, did collect prescription and will squeeze another play session or two into the calendar next week for DD.

More tidying tomorrow, need to send a few texts to arrange things for next week and update the calendar. Will make time to meal plan as I think I'll be getting flustered next week getting into the after-school routine, and we'll all eat better if I've got food sorted.

Toffeewhirl · 03/09/2015 22:54

Another one here hoping mindee is ok, Nick. I always used to dread any of my mindees getting hurt on my watch, but sometimes these things happen, just as they do with our own children.

Sorry about sad family news, knitting Sad. And I hope you hear soon about DS2's school.

Great roundup and links, SC. I'm ashamed to say that I still haven't actually followed any of the links, but am intending to start once the DC are back at school next week.

Good news about the boys' first day at their new school, Blue.

CantSee - I do wish my sons' would eat like yours. They both eat like little birds .

Grey - I remember rejoicing when my DSs started sleeping in till 6am too, whereas I would be appalled if they woke me up at that time now Grin. I'm glad the sleep issue is improving.

Sad news today: I heard that the dog my DS1 used to walk has just died. She played a major part in getting DS1 back out of the house the first time his anxiety struck, when he was about 13. She never forgot us, even after DS1 stopped walking her, and if we happened to meet her in the street, she would go frantic with joy at seeing us again.

fuzzpig · 03/09/2015 23:05

Aw nick :( hope mindee is ok, and that the parents keep you posted. These things happen.

Big hugs, knitting, go easy on yourself while you process what has happened.

Toffee :( hope DS1 is ok about the news. Dogs are excellent friends, and treasured.

No flying here, just about managed to get through the day! Looking after friend's 2 as well as ours, childcare swap thing. But it was also the first two home ed activities of the term and they went really well, and I've found out some more cool things to do (any home edders here - check out 'into film' film festival, you can sign up free as an HE parent), and been planning more of our little city break next year so feeling positive.

Off to a family wedding this weekend and as if by magic AF has just arrived, achy and yuck and did I mention achy (my ME symptoms always increase during AF) - not looking forward to the long drive!

Blah!

Feathery waves and all that. :)

CantSee4Looking · 03/09/2015 23:34

Hahaha toffee nope not when the horrible creature has a mahoosive growth spurt 2 wks into term and grows out of school uniform just as the shops remove it from the shelves. he has grown an inch this week already. he will be taller than me by next September at this rate. It is getting expensive as he is now just about to head into adult sizes in some shops.

CantSee4Looking · 03/09/2015 23:37

We bought one of these and it is great for loading ds up with calories via fruit. although we use apple juice as the milk alternative is not so great for smoothies and milkshakes. Thankfully ds only eats like this when he grows, he will happily skip 2 meals/day when he stops though.

Toffeewhirl · 04/09/2015 01:25

That's funny, Cant: I bought exactly the same blender to get fruit and calories into my boys this summer. It's been very good, although both boys remain annoyingly fussy about lumps and the wrong combinations of fruit .

Well done at getting through your busy day, fuzz. I always tried to persuade DSs to go to that festival, but they refused Sad. Looked fun to me. Hope you feel better soon, by the way.

Aimed to get DS1 into bed by 11.30 tonight, but he didn't turn out the light till 12.30. Still, it's earlier than other nights, so we're on the right track. Unfortunately, I'm now wide awake again and also hungry, so have come downstairs for some breakfast cereal and a little browse online.

AsTimeGoesBy · 04/09/2015 07:05

I've got that blender too, it was used daily when we first got it about 6 months ago, but has fallen by the wayside a bit now, I never found a combination DS liked and DD only wanted banana milkshakes.

Dogsbumhair · 04/09/2015 07:31

Strangely found myself looking at that blender and thinking it must be some wonder blender and should I buy it and then I'll definitely get better at consuming my five a day, even though I've got a blender on the side in the kitchen that I never use Hmm

I'm enjoying the full links of the September thread, I can further indulge my cleaning fantasies by reading links to cleaning tasks that I could be doing if I didn't have a Meerkitten permanently attached to me Blush I may have to have a cold shower!....

Dogsbumhair · 04/09/2015 07:44

Thanks Toffee and Astime for reassuring me that I'm not the only one to feel so excited about the first Christmas

Toffee I still remember vividly when our rather mean and slightly older than us neighbour told me and my brother that Father Christmas wasn't real when I was six, I was gutted!

SC If you think I'm exaggerating about Deborah Kerr dress, check out these pictures! Very practical when your 3 months old! Hmm Grin

September 2015 fledglings shine their sink and their lace up shoes and prepare for the new academic year ahead
Dogsbumhair · 04/09/2015 07:56

Mortified to see I've just written 'your' instead of 'you're' Blush I blame the sleep deprivation....

I think most bonkers outfit award goes to woman I met recently in breastfeeding group who told me that a relative had bought her baby a Superbaby costume complete with cape! Still I guess they will get some good photos for humiliating/blackmailing their child with in the future Grin

Dogsbumhair · 04/09/2015 08:10

Think I might go and hang out in one of the hammocks in the naughty corner for a bit.....Grin

Plan for today is get some food in for the weekend and I'm going for a walk this afternoon with friend and dog. Need to put on some laundry and fold up dry laundry. Any other sneaky cleaning and tidying I can get in if Meerkitten decides to have a nap fat chance is a bonus Wink

standclear · 04/09/2015 09:08

Good morning! [Hums Club Tropicana theme along with Fizrim]

Ooohhhhhh!!! How lovely to open up the thread and see Meerkitten looking so utterly scrummy!!!! (I know what you mean about the practicalities of the outfit Dogsbum but she does look totally gorgeous in it!!)

What does everyone mean that Father Christmas is not real Shock???

What I'm looking for is a blender that peels and chops vegetables and then turns them in to soup. (I spend hours and hours peeling carrots and chopping onions etc.) I know this sort of machine exists because I was talking to someone at a drinks party who used it to prepare veggie dishes for their dog - and I was just about to ask for further details when we were interrupted - (evidently very thrilling parties I go to Wink)

Can'tsee dd goes through those mahoosive growth spurts too and like you say, you can always tell they are coming because she doesn't stop eating, and as she never eats much in one sitting, that means prep of lots and lots of continuous little meals!!

[Hands large hot water bottle wrapped in fluffy fleece over to Fuzzpig] Hope you don't feel too unwell to enjoy the family wedding this w/e.

Oh Toffee that is so sad about the dog!! I do remember him and how you and ds dog-sat and walked him for a while. How Sad but (assuming that he died of natural causes/old age and was with his family) good that he had a happy life! Hope ds1 not too upset though.

Know what you mean about making the most of things before all the extra-curric classes kick in Astimegoesby!! We are going through the traditional will I, won't I ballet subscription dance atm!! Very nice in meantime not to have to go anywhere in the evenings and sit in a cold car!

Btw - thanks for thanks everyone - and don't worry those of you who aren't following the links as yet - absolutely no need to apologise - I am not following them yet either Grin Grin Grin

Knitting very sorry to hear that you've had sad news Sad in your extended family - as you say, it is that sort of thing that puts everything else in to perspective.

[Looking at that poor Syrian child on the news last night, it hardly seemed appropriate posting Flylady links, but life goes on I suppose.]

Hope antibiotics kicking in and good to hear that the start of term for your dc is going well. And well done for getting such a good mark on your Lady Macbeth project Wink Smile [wink!!

Ditto what Astimegoesbysaid about the stress of keeping you and ds2 in limbo over schooling situation - hope you have a definitive answer soon.

Goodness, your friend up road is doing a very good thing but hope she knows what she is in for! We've taken on a highly strung dog and it is hard work - but collies are a league above - hopefully the x genes will have calming influence!!

Good luck with party prep for Sat!

Nicknacks hope you've had good news re: mindee and you can rest a bit easier now.

Rather tentative wing flaps to everyone else!
(Tentative because I hurt my back at 6am this morning . Was rushing around, carrying piles of things upstairs and downstairs in advance of cleaning lady's visit, which involved doing a lot of bending and twisting, and back suddenly went in to horrible spasm. Moving very slowly now but have to go back (in 20 mins time) to finish volunteering reorg this morning - can't leave others to do it - but going to have to take it gently and hopefully walk there and back will help) Furry one helping by putting his head on my knee in v comforting sort of way Smile.

Btw - I have to thank you Knitting - house is such a mess that I was v tempted to cancel cleaning lady this morning but remembered you counselling against this a while back - so I didn't - and now I am extremely happy she is here!! (Will put us in much better stead for weekend ahead!)

Hope everyone has a good day!!

Managed to wake myself and DC up by 8.30 this morning, which means we're on course for earlier and earlier awakenings over the next four days, all ready (hopefully) for our 7am wake up on Monday Shock. (For those jealous of such late hours, I spent years being dragged out of bed by 5am or earlier, so have done my time Wink).

However, I believe DS1 has just gone back to sleep .

Short list today:

Washing up
Quick crisis clean
Make cakes with DS2
Meeting with another mum whose son is suffering from anxiety issues and wants advice
Get ready for...
Dinner and Wine with friends Grin

Dogsbumhair · 04/09/2015 10:25

Ooh I love Club Tropicana and all other cheesy 80s music

Glad you liked the photos SC they are cute I do have to confess and they are sent with love so I am making sure that I do put her in all these outfits at least once and take a photo, trouble is that there are so many I've got a backlog of outfits to put her in and I don't think it is fair to put her in more than one random outfit for a 'photo shoot' on any one occasion so it is taking some time Hmm Grin

I will look back on these comedy photos fondly and with lots of laughter though I'm sure Wink I'm thinking slides for powerpoint presentation at Meerkitten's wedding [evil Grin]

Dogsbumhair · 04/09/2015 10:28

Apologies for bombshell about Father Christmas SC Wink

The peeling, chopping and soup making gadget sounds great by the way, let me know if you ever find out what it is!! I suspect it's called a chef Grin

CantSee4Looking · 04/09/2015 14:44

Actually the super baby suit makes sense to me. It is a huge trend of take themed pictures thing that has exploded over the internet pinterest etc and goes with the 1st birthday cake smash photos/photoshoots. Hmm

cba rules strong. my bed is already calling my name and I am counting down until i can fall into it. Need to sit down an write a massive to do list for next week and prep for it. But right now I am going to pack ds' stuff and watch some nothingness tv

standclear · 04/09/2015 19:44

Hi all, well done for surviving the first week of September everyone, which is always pretty stressful!!

Bit of a mixed day here. Hideous muscle spasm in side (not really my back) is causing me grief. At worst, feels like an electric shock which makes you feel sick!

[Dog and I, both nursing injuries, both lurching wierldly to the right when we walk - must look a pretty sight - although walk consisted of quick crawl to nearest lamp post and back and had to poo pick v gingerly indeed - afraid I wouldn't be able to get back upright again and would be found by passer by face down in canine by-product!! Grin Grin]

Just about survived volunteer clear up and came home and lay on sofa. Feel badly for dh because it is his birthday and we were all going out for a meal to celebrate but I couldn't get in car, so we had to have take out instead (with rather nice bottle of wine to make up for food). Fortunately had wrapped and assembled presents and cards well in advance.

Won't be able to join dh and dd on family outing tomorrow that I was really looking forward to. Never mind eh. Just one of those things and certainly makes you appreciate being able bodied usually and how exhausting it must be to have limited mobility and yet another-- a heads up that I am overweight and unfit and should do something about it asap.

Sorry that was very 'me' 'me'. Hope everyone ok.

Hope you managed a bit of r& r today Can'tsee

Arf at chef Dogsbum think you are probably right as peeling function sounds too good to be true!! I remember the photo-family gift backlog situation well btw!! People don't realise that you can't just endlessly dress and re-dress a baby. It's enough of a palaver getting baby bathed, nappy changed, clean clothing on as I recall. Once they are asleep, you are certainly not going to wake them up for a photocall!

Toffee well done wrt organised and gradual school acclimatisation regime! Much better than the sudden shock re-entry as practised here.

DD has had good start to term but (owing to the above) is white as a sheet and over-tired so we are all going to bed now (8.45pm here!).

DD seems to like secondary school so far, and has made two new friends. She says her geography teacher has a really, really long pointed red nose with a bobble on the end of it, that all the teachers are really, really strict and most exciting of all, her class doesn't have to walk in a line downstairs altogether to go to the playground at lunch time (they can just walk 'free'!!), and that there are vending machines!! Grin Grin

Enjoy your weekends everyone!

**

Baby-step no. 5 for Sat 5th 2015 is here. Keep up with previous steps and banish negative thinking from your mind (in my case "it's too overwhelming, I can't do it, so I won't bother"). Replace with positive thoughts!

We are currently in Zone 1: The Entrance, Front Porch and Dining Room here.

For those Fledglings at this stage: here is the detailed cleaning list for Zone One.

No missions because it is the weekend!

The daily focus for Saturday is family fun. Newcomers: one of the aims of the Flylady system is that, because cleaning routines are being followed during the week, weekends can be reserved for family time and relaxation (well, that's the theory anyway!)

The habit for September is developing a before-bed routine here.

Summary of above (which updates itself automatically) is here: flight plan.

TGIF!!
