Welcome to the September 2015 Fledgling Flying thread! Hang up your microfibre cloths and park your buckets here!!

[Sorry - I've namechanged again - but remain SC]

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of Flylady (minus cutesy language and a surfeit of e-mails) with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation (and Wine of course) along the way. (More info available here and here ) and here.

Humungous thanks to our previous thread leaders (nns relating to a planet and to a colour) for guiding us through the summer and keeping us sane throughout the holidays! Thanks Thanks

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach - and don't worry - we are all at different stages. Some of us (SC stares at feet) -are stuck at the decluttering stage after an embarrassingly long number of years Blush:

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

And those of you who have decluttered and are really enthusiastic can throw some detailed cleaning in to the mix as well!

This is a very long-running thread so we may appear cliquey but we really aren't! All newcomers, long-termers, lurkers and intermittent returnees not only welcome to join in but positively encouraged to do so!

Any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Good luck!

I am sure you are Blue; are the buyers side being equally slow? The continuing stress must be awful.

Yes, but she needs adult Fr conversation around her. Her Fr was good enough to pass oblig state exam that every native child needs to sit to go on to secondary; so although there is def a prob which we anticipated, the question is one of emphasis. And she is putting such an unnecessary negative slant on it.

Been out tonight for fantastic meal with lovely friends which has cheered me up no end. Still dreading week ahead but feel fortified for it now!

G'night all!

Yes to the fussy eating, in fact I've started a thread about it tonight. The only carb that both DS and DD will eat is pasta and DH doesn't bloody well like it .

Sorry about house delays Blue, fingers crossed for a speedy resolution.

Well, I'm relaxed tonight after my first proper shower since Sunday thanks to the eczema patch testing. I had two positive results, nickel and an obscure gum which is used in old fashioned fabric plasters and apparently gazillions of other things. I knew about the plasters but didn't know about this ingredient. I suspect an old "silver" ring I've been wearing for the last 6 months or so may be a source of nickel contact, also the fact that I routinely carry keys in my hand rather than take a bag with me on school runs etc won't have helped. All interesting stuff.

Bugger all Flying done Blush.

CantSee4Looking · 19/09/2015 00:46

Is it going to be difficult avoiding the triggers whoknows?

I will admit the best thing i ever did was just give in and batch cooked meals of various descriptions. We very rarely eat the same thing in this house too many allergies and texture/taste issues. It is a huge relief to not have to worry about whether it will get eaten or wasted. Yes it is a bit more effort but the batch cooking means that it is not really much more expensive and in theory saves on cooking as the microwave goes ping to reheat a lot of it and it is less small batch cooking. Sorry to those who are keen on everyone eats the same meal way of thinking, but same time eating was the only way forwards in this house. So much calmer and people get to eat favourite foods which they wouldn't other wise.

I lit the wood burner. It was lovely. fluffly blanket and comfy rug to curl up on. AND i had control of the tv remote

AsTimeGoesBy · 19/09/2015 08:05

Well, the suspect ring has been removed and I've been googling to find a little key wallet to protect my hands from my keys. I've been avoiding fabric plasters for years and so far reading ingredients on my toiletries had not found the culprit in any of them.

As for the eating, we do kind of adopt the mix and match habit at home, more with leftovers than batch cooking as not much freezer space. However it's out of the house that's more problematic, DS's new school do not allow packed lunches, he had a trip out with a school provided lunch yesterday and ate none of it, he's got a 3 day Scout camp at half term, etc. My love for cooking has been destroyed.

CantSee4Looking · 19/09/2015 09:41

Oh god, eating out. Yeah this is generally avoiding as it is a complete and utter logistical allergy nightmare. Ds does not eat anything provided by school full stop unless it is a residential at which point the poor teacher nearly has a nervous breakdown once you point out to her that milk is in everything from gravy granules to bread including sausages and ham. Eating out is not something that we manage so easily and cannot occur spur of the moment. But that said we managed fish and chips on the spur of the moment because of the new legislation wrt to allergies. Bless the guy serving us he was so proud of his allergy information binder Grin But it is more hassel than worth
hence all the batch cooking and picnic stuff planning.

fuzzpig · 19/09/2015 09:53

Hi folks.

Need to actually do some Flying today. Well, laundry anyway, I think that's as good as it's going to get! Virus pretty much gone other than a sniffly nose, but still got the leftover aches.

House is quiet as DD has gone on a Brownies thing. So just me and DS. Might do some home ed too, he doesn't realise it's a weekend :o

knittingwithnettles · 19/09/2015 10:09

4 that is an excellent tip about the small portion batch cooking...I always somehow thought in dinner party quantities which means that large stews look at me accusingly after too long in freezer.
time I have a nickel/silver allergy too re jewellery. Only gold will do! Have you thought of plants too? In our garden dogwood and euphorbia and fig leaves all bring dh out in rash. Grass give me grass rash if I roll in it Wink

SC I am so impressed by your dd's trilinguality - this is just a blip, in the end she is fluent in English as well as French and that will be majorly to her advantage academically. (sorry my grammar isn't good) Dh is absolutely fluent in English despite never talking English at home as teen and he puts it down to reading reading reading English novels, and looking up any words he didn't know (oh and going to pubs with 20 somethings and talking a lot of student gibberish)

taken two kids to drama. Ds2 is running himself a bath rather than tidy his room. I have put a wash on and walked around the garden in a sort of delightful trance, only to be reminded of the oceans of housework that separate me from a calm orderly existence. Have returned to bed rather than do it Blush in pretence of paying some online bills.

knittingwithnettles · 19/09/2015 10:15

And I've always wanted to ask..do people nowadays say Au Contraire in French or is that a very old fashioned "arch" sort of phrase, like saying on the contrary as opposed to I don't think so or Nah. I always notice when foreign people use very old fashioned English phrases having been taught that is polite and not realising that we have all got more sloppy (got more sloppy being a very low brow way to put it as well -using word "got" in general frowned upon when I was growing up.)

standclear · 19/09/2015 12:04

I don't find I use it that much in conversation Knitting, I think it is pretty much on a par with "on the contrary" in English, ie used infrequently. But it is used every now and then (more often than not, as you say, in formal business meetings/ serious radio discussions/in written communication).

Colloquially, I think you would say "non, c'est l'inverse" or more directly, "non, ce n'est pas vrai".

I still try to dissuade dd from using 'got'!

That is very reassuring about your dh and langs btw - thank you - wish dd would look up words in a dictionary so assiduously!! (We've bought her loads but they are rarely opened!) She does read lots in French though. And she occasionally deigns to look up a word on the Internet!

I need to look at the lang situation long term I know, but at the same time, it's important dd doesn't get behind from the start. I just worry that we are setting her up to fail and the task ahead is too hard. (It was bad enough in primary when I could keep up; it's going to get much, much harder.) We'll just have to see, and have another opp to meet teachers end of Oct so will assess then.

Good to hear your garden now the cause of so much pleasure after all of your hard work!

Astimegoesby Cannot find your thread! It must be really worrying for you when your ds goes without food at lunch. I would hate that. Hope general wisdom of Mumsnet comes up with some solutions for you.

Good you have got to the bottom of the cause of your allergies! Amazing that an allergy can be triggered by carrying keys! I have the old-fashioned plaster issue too.

I try and do the "all sit down and eat the same thing" thing (mainly owing to major laziness and not wanting to cook different things) but I can see if it is totally different if allergies involved or strong dislikes and I cheat anyway because I only tend to cook what I know dd will eat. Dh and I eat v differently when on our own.

[Couldn't believe it last night. DD and a friend were nibbling on crisps and dips prior to dinner with friends. I overheard her asking about the hummus and trying it and saying it was "quite nice"!! Couldn't believe it! I have been trying to get her to eat hummus for about 6 years!! Peer pressure can be v helpful sometimes!]

Can'tsee can see mini batch cooking is a brilliant solution to stopping waste and worry and hadn't thought before about all the implications of not being able to eat out, or school trips etc. Must be so difficult.

But glad EU legislation (about the fish and chips) good for something occasionally Grin [If you want the ref it is www.food.gov.uk/sites/default/files/food-allergen-labelling-technical-guidance.pdf - happen to know this as it is something we deal with in office occasionally]

Glad you are feeling better Fuzzpig! Good luck with the Flying!

Dh getting ready for long business trip today. Usual chaos of getting ready. DD over-tired and snippy. Furry one a bit barky. He is very attached to dh and can sense when he is going and goes and lies in his suitcase Sad. I know from experience there is absolutely no point in doing Flying until dh has vacated premises as he usually leaves a tornado trail of clothes and papers and cables in his wake ...

Big waves to everyone else!

BlueEyeshadow · 19/09/2015 14:38

SC Watching French tv can be a good way to boost fluency and hear adult conversation.

Re house, yes it's all the buyers' lawyers being slow. That and the fact that ours never bothered to check that the contract had arrived with them, and they never bothered to chase it up. Everything else is done, I think.

AsTimeGoesBy · 19/09/2015 16:06

There's an EU directive on Nickel in jewellery too SC here. My ring pre-dates it, which is one reason I think it might be a culprit. I have no problems with proper / modern silver, I wear a 40 year old silver necklace most of the time and that doesn't cause any problems, lucky really as I really don't suit yellow gold. Also googling Material Safety Data Sheets for household chemicals gives a lot of useful info.

standclear · 19/09/2015 19:31

Hi all. Hope everyone has had a reasonably good day.

Glad you are getting to grips with allergy situation Astimegoesby and great excuse to insist on being bought 'proper' jewellery Wink.

Thanks Blue, yes we do need to watch more French telly - dd prefers Dutch - but we all need to watch more shame it is so dire. Will buy some films I think! And we do already watch the news in Fr.

Sounds as though both sets of solicitors are at fault then. Why it all takes so long I have no idea. It's awful not having control over the situation either. Here's hoping that contracts can be signed soon Thanks. Wishing you courage with the continuing saga!

Dh went at lunch time and left a wake of destruction in his path. House now officially a total pit again on all floors. Could not face clearing it up. Watched C4 racing and fell asleep!

DD has been busy making yet another detailed cardboard structure for her Playmobil horses. It is the eighth resting on her bedroom floor. Managed to bite my tongue and admire it rather than criticise about the state of her room (which is awful). I am in absolutely no position to criticise atm Blush.

Really cannot keep on top of this house at all atm. Dh tried to help by doing an hour in the basement the other day (unprecedented) but has made it worse by just shoving things willy nilly on shelves. It just gets you down when you know it is all up to you and nothing will get done unless it gets done by you and you alone: and that means sorting every piece of plastic crapola and every mug and every piece of paper and every sock ad infinitum. Don't get me wrong, I know it is my "job" as it were but I am so bored with it all.

[How's that for an inspiring thread leader's speech?? Grin Grin]

DD and I are about to have a pizza and Dr Who evening so will stop whinging now again and post links and say goodnight!

Big waves to one and all!

Thankfully, today's step was just some nonsense about reading testimonials so no harm done hopefully! Blush

Tomorrow will be our first day in Zone 4: The Master Bedroom (September 20 – 26) : here.

This is the detailed cleaning list for Zone 4: here.

Dr Who is very good this evening, vraiment Smile[sp?)
looked at it with a critical eye and realised it is all in the visuals and that's why it is family entertainment. Even a four year old (with body armour) could engage on some level.

Ds2 started being extremely tiresome and demanding at about 4pm so I took him on a mapreading drive round neighbourhood, followed by a run. I found myself on a busy motorway road and had to bail out pretty quickly (this is driving not running) ds2 found it all hilarious (in a nice way) left mum left, we can go down this road, oh and there's a nice view of Wembley Stadium..Grin

like you SC have abandoned mess again, but had a moderately nice day overall, as dh and I managed a short walk.

standclear · 20/09/2015 15:31

Waves to Knitting!

YY to Dr Who - loved the "bog hands"!

Very much sympathise with your driving adventures - I daren't stray from my set routes - terrifying when I do so by mistake!

Feel a bit less guilty today as have given kitchen reasonably thorough clean today and cleaned out recycling bins with bleach.

Have also made a refrigerator cake (oven has died) and apple compote.

DD has tidied playroom and finished her homework - double yay!

Think it must have been the lovely sunshine that gave us the motivation and it's car free day so everywhere beautifully calm and no traffic noise at all [bliss!]

All set for downstairs home bleugh tomorrow - praying my back will hold out.

Not much traffic on here and shortly going to deliver dd of to high tea at friend's house so will post links for tomorrow now and 'see' you all again in the morning, after I have ironed uniform, cleaned bathroom and got all set for Downton.

Have a lovely evening everyone!

The baby-step for tomorrow, Mon 21 Sept, is here an ignorable one about reading Flying Q & A's.

We are in Zone 4 this week: The Master Bedroom (September 20 – 26) : here. Btw, on writing this, the Flylady website hadn't quite caught up with the Zones as usual Confused, so don't get befuddled by it!

If you have finished decluttering in Zone 4, this is the detailed cleaning list for the master bedroom: here.

The missions for Monday and for the week ahead can be found here. 15 mins decluttering and cleaning under the bed.

The daily focus for Monday is : the home bleugh (as we call it). Ten mins spent on 7 essential tasks.

The habit for September is developing a before-bed routine here: www.flylady.net/d/habits-of-the-month/september/ .

A summary of the above (which should update itself daily) can be found here: www.flylady.net/c/fp.php?tzm=-120.

Have a good start to the week everyone!

today we went on a walk, am determined to keep up the enforced exercise with ds2 and dh (who gets very depressed at weekends) in particular. Came back cooked fish from fishmonger..big mistake, as it had bones and both ds1 and dd went into lockdown...no not eating it I'm not hungry etc. Hey ho, back to supermarket fish steaks Hmm At least dh appreciated it.
Then a meltdown over Segway (a sort of motorised skate board that dd is demanding) I said no way, she was furious.
All in all everyone is a bit impossible, including dh today! He is doing Lego in new shed just to prove a point, whilst ds2 is listening to Eurovision songs upstairs and periodically trying sneak downstairs to switch on the sports channels. Dh has also cleared out a garden box full of gum boots and gadgets, in attempt to strim to lawn edges, which made him extremely bad tempered. It is when you start to tidy up that your children make you feel really cross [sigh]

Ooh had forgotten it is Downton tonight. Also dreading trying to get ds2 off to Mass later, but no doubt he will go albeit reluctantly.

SC sounds bliss to me, all homework done and apple compote to boot.

knittingwithnettles · 20/09/2015 16:15

And I'm still enjoying the clean car Grin

A bit like losing your hot water, you need to have none for several weeks to appreciate the luxury that is a hot shower. So clean car is for me a special form of bliss. And it was easy really. Must try harder to apply same technique to house Blush

standclear · 20/09/2015 17:19

DD is now with friends so have an hour or so to myself!

Yes Knitting I have decided that, after many years of dithering Grin, I actually need to do missions and baby-steps at appointed times Shock Grin They are not that onerous when you get down to it and the results definitely improves one's state of mind!

Well done re: exercise and at least trying with fish on bone even if dc rebelled. (Much more flavourful cooked on bone anyway!)

Yes it is blissfully calm when dh is away Grin Wink

all completely pearshaped by teatime. Dd insulted ds2 and vice versa, Mass didn't happen and Kipling springs to mind. If etc.. except not the punchline. Dh then masterfully suggested a takeaway to cheer us all up, which did in fact make everyone a bit less stroppy. Dd continued to dislike any strange foods though, in declaring that the duck was so crispy "it hurt her throat" and ds1 said he was trying to lose weight and takeaway was too fatty. But in a nice way ConfusedSmile

done
changed ds2's bed and put on clean sheets
forced ds2 to have a shower
did some science revision with ds2 about lungs
cleared up some takeaway
hung out some washing
dh hung out some more washing

Downton next.

CantSee4Looking · 20/09/2015 20:59

Sometimes knitting, i think you have the patience of a saint. I would have thrown a strop and told the fussy buggers to sort themselves out ages ago. DH included!

knittingwithnettles · 20/09/2015 22:54

I am now the only person who watches Downton and wonders how they can cope with all those lazy people upstairs who want feeding ALL THE TIME. The weight of that chopping board Mrs Patmore was plonking down, and then the Earl coming down and stealing chicken legs from the fridge..

But [floats off] it was all sublime really..the embroidery, the scenery, the jokes. Even the underwear was sublime.
