I have emptied it but it smells of sour milk when I turn it on I think because I have hoovered up some food (revolting I know).
Is there anything to be done?
Shake and Vac??
(It's a Henry btw, if that makes a difference)
TIA

Think you can put a few drops of smelly oil like lavender in the bag. Or you used to be able to get some smelly bag things at the supermaket that looked like tea bags, to put in the bag.

MrsBadger · 27/11/2006 08:58

Guess you have changed the bag...

I can only add my experience... if you hoover up a whole tin of talc the hoover (and every room you hoover thereafter) will be delicately talc-scented for weeks and weeks.

Hoover up some bicarb of soda? That seems to deal with most whiffs!

harpsichordcarrier · 27/11/2006 09:15

yep. changed the bag. Good idea about the lavender, and I am liking the talc idea - which is basically DIY shake n vac isn't it...
thanks both

hello, just wanted to say that I have tried some talc and some bicarb and they seem to be working (though the hoover gave off a very exciting static charge ) so thanks all

washing out the tubes
that sounds pretty full on I normally adopt a pretty hands off approach to housework tbh.

Have you changed the filters?

hugeheadofhair · 04/12/2006 13:23

Put some washing powder in the bag. Makes your house smell nice and clean. I don't get any static charge with this.

FestiveFrex · 04/12/2006 13:42

My dog, bless him (not) pee'd on my hoover. I cleaned up as much as I could see and thought I'd dealt with it. Unforunately some of the pee must have got inside the hoover and it gives off this terribly unpleasant whiff of dog pee every time I turn it on. I have changed the bag and cleaned every visible part of it. I'm not sure putting some thing in the bag will help, other than smothering the pee smell with a more powerful one.

Any other suggestions?

fortyplus · 04/12/2006 13:44

I've got some Dettol air freshener spray that is really good for neutralising smells rather than just overpowering them with a sickly perfume.
My cat got shut in the spare room and weed on the carpet - it even worked on that.

iota · 04/12/2006 13:52

my dyson had a really bad personal hygiene issue - turned out that my mum (I suspect) had hoovered up a dead animal - thank you cat.

The only solution was to dismantle the entire thing on the patio and hose it out completely.

dh was seconded for the dismantling duties.

Memo: dead animals smell vile when rehydrated

JARMgotstuckupthechimney · 04/12/2006 13:54

shake n vac - i used it wed last week, and even today it still smells all fresh everytime i hoover!

clevergirl · 04/12/2006 14:08

bouchard vacuum cleaner freshener from boots - forgive me if this has already been mentioned ..... they cost £1
