Do you wash your bras by hand?

....or in the machine?

Just asking as I recently bought a (for me) quite expensive bra from Rigby & Peller. It was washed once in a lingerie bag in the machine, and hung on a rack to dry. Part of the lace side has separated from the seam of the cup. The shop is saying they won't exchange/refund because I should have washed it by hand.

Do you wash bras by hand or in the machine? Is the shop wrong, or am I?

machine, but then mine are all big, white, non glamourous feeding bras, so are pretty hardy Did you use a gentle wash? Did it say on label hand wash only?

Oh, that's really bad luck. I've always bunged my bras in the machine - even the 'good' ones - and been lucky, but I remember when I've bought bras from R & P, they always make a point of telling me not to wash them in a machine (who has time to wash bras by hand??). Seems to me that the bra must have been faulty, though, to have fallen to bits so fast. Mine have lasted for years, being machine washed and sometimes even tumble dried!

Mine are machine washable and can be tumble dried! So thats what i do!

mousiemousie · 20/11/2006 18:54

Why not use the handwash cycle on the machine? Best of both worlds!

Earlybird · 20/11/2006 18:54

It was washed on delicate, and not scalding hot. It is nicer than an everyday bra, but definitely not a "gossamer wing" sort of item - smooth cup (no frills), with lacy sides and scalloping on straps (very itchy scalloping, as it happens!). And not a R&P "own brand" but a Lejaby.

I only buy m&S v plain ones - so yes i wash them in the machine - I don;t have time to hand wash underwear. i did once buy a vaguley lacey one which got all frayed at the edges - I took it back and they did exchange it, but seemed a bit reluctant - but that was meant to be machine washable

wash my bras by hand - are you mad?
I'd put ds in the machine if I could.

your R&P bras are supposed to be a bit special aren't they - I say if you can afford to buy your bras from them don't you have a little man who could wash them for you?

NannyL · 20/11/2006 18:56

No never always* in the machine.... in the net bag if i remember... or not if i dont.... white ones at 60, coloured ones at 40.... regardless of marterial!

al have always been fine... never ever had a problem with 1 of them!

hulababy · 20/11/2006 18:56

Fio - honestly don't know. Will check now and respond. It may be my own fault, but it was only washed once!

OK, have checked label, and here are instructions:

Hand wash
No bleach
Do not dry clean (??)
Do not iron (do people really iron their bras?)
Do not dry in machine

So, guess it's my fault. I've had plain Lejaby bras before and they've lasted years with delicates wash in lingerie bag. Either this bra was too delicate, or faulty. I tend to think a bit of both...

do I buxton!

Earlybird · 21/11/2006 09:28

So, I guess I don't have a leg to stand on, but I still do think it's unreasonable that it's falling apart after one machine wash on delicate in a lingerie bag. Grrrrr!!

Clearly expensive requires different treatment! Maybe I'm just not an expensive bra kind of girl...

No mine get boiled up along with everything else although when they're new I start off with good intentions. That's why my bras (good old M&S plain white ones) look a bit grey.

I suppose I would if it was very delicate/expensive.

The trouble with hand-washing in my house is that things that need extra attention just skulk about at the bottom of the washing basket for ever waiting for me to get around to it.

Clary · 21/11/2006 10:39

Earlybird I do think that?s crap that it fell apart after one wash.

However unlike most on this thread I do wash my bras by hand after one fell apart in the machine and filled it with bizarre greay powder (around the wire apparently).

It only takes 5 mins. And mine cost £25 and have to be ordered online as I am such a weird size (32FF) so I?m a bit precious about them. If I was able to buy M&S ones at £10 a time I probably wouldn?t bother.

WhizzBangCaligula · 21/11/2006 10:46

Well I only buy tenner in the sale M&S ones, but I always wash by hand. I don't know why I do that...
