Ammonia smell in carlet

Ds3 is potty training and has had a number of wee incidents on the carpet. I've used a carpet cleaner in Tuesday, then again last night, and today the whole carpet and room smells of ammonia. Do I keep using the cleaner each evening, and hope that repeated washing eventually gets rid of it? It seems to be the whole carpet that smells and not just one spot.

I'm seriously considering hard floors again, but DH isn't at all keen.

I think you might need to change your cleaning method. Use an old towel to get as much of the wee out of the carpet as possible - I find stomping on the towel really helps. Then use cold water with a couple of drops of plain Stardrops and some bicarb to clean the area of carpet. Don't let it get too wet. Then blot up excess moisture. If it still smells, dampen the area and sprinkle liberally with bicarb and leave to let the bicarb neutralise the smell.

If you are using a carpet cleaning machine, pass and re-pass over the area using the setting where it extracts moisture before then using the water and cleaning fluid to clean the area then going over again to get the moisture out. It might be worth getting some specialist odour neutralising cleaner for the machine. Simple Solution products sold at Pets at Home are good, not cheap though.

We had an elderly dog who had lots of accidents so I was something of an expert at cleaning them up. Even though we replaced the carpet after he passed away, it did not smell at all.

Is the carpet wool?
We had carpet cleaned and the guy said that the wool can be a bit smelly when wet. But it dries and doesn't smell anymore.

Thanks. It's a carpet cleaning machine, it seems to be a decent one judging by the amount of disgusting brown water it sucks back up. Its not a wool carpet. I'll go over again, sucking out water before rewashing it. I'll also look for that Simple Solution stuff too; we have a 13 year old dog so I imagine we'll need it for her too at some point!
