Cleaning mould from carpets, and muck from toilets

MIL moved a few months ago without selling her house. It's now been sold, and we need to get some cleaning done before her buyers complete. She now lives too far away to come and deal with it so muggins gets the job ... oh joy, oh rapture.

There are a couple of big patches of white mould on the carpet behind the bath where water has splashed, and I don't know what to try to shift it.

Plus under the rim of the toilet is caked in horrible, smelly muck that I just can't shift. It's not limescale, I don't think - just muck. Have tried several different types of toilet cleaners and stacks of elbow grease, but no joy. I've also tried a paste of bicarb and lemon juice, but that hasn't shifted it either.

Any domestic goddesses out there have the secret to shifting either, please?

Tell her to Go forth and multiply, or get your DH to do it, have you got MUG written throught like a stick of Brighton Rock ??

JackieNo · 20/11/2006 11:41

You get all the good jobs, don't you WWB. Small price to pay, though, I guess, for having her further away. Sorry, no ideas how to get rid of the stuff - how about a brillo pad for the toilet gunk? Chisel.

WigWamBam · 20/11/2006 11:44

Yes, I have "mug" written across my forehead ...

It has to be done, though, and at least this will be the house done with. And at least she's now miles and miles and miles away, so a small price to pay.

If I wait for dh to do it I'll wait a long time ...

I've tried Brillo pads, Jackie, but I don't think anything short of a chisel is going to shift this stuff.

OK ok

I normally would not post anything that would help the old bitch out, but if it is going to make your life easier in the long run.

Go to JS and buy loads and loads of their own brand denture cleaning tablets, put them in the cistern and let them trickle through. IYKWIM

Whilst you are waiting, spray the rim with this stuff with Viakal get the spray and the bottle you can be more accurate with the bottle.

WigWamBam · 20/11/2006 11:52

I don't much feel like helping the old goat out either, LGJ, but needs must!

Denture tablets in the cistern is a brilliant idea - thank you. It's getting the stuff up under the rim that's the problem and that's a fab idea.

Any ideas on the manky carpet?

Yes roll her up in it, and take her to the top of a very steep hill.

WigWamBam · 20/11/2006 12:05

Ohhhh yes ... Cooper's Hill near where she lives now would be brilliant ... stuff the cheese rolling, bring on the MIL rolling

Any other suggestions please?

(For the mouldy carpet, not the MIL )

I'd pull up the carpets and leave clean floorboards.

I have no idea what is in it, but cilit bang would probably work on your toilet if the denture tabs don't help.

bctmum · 20/11/2006 14:14

Could try neat vinegar on the muck.

Get rid of the carpet.

Good luck

WigWamBam · 20/11/2006 14:27

I'd really like to try and clean it rather than take the carpet up, carpets are included in the sale and I don't know where we would stand with taking them up and leaving bare floorboards. Having advertised it with carpets, we would probably have to replace any carpet we ripped up, and this house move has caused us enough hassle as it is!

OK, I'm down on my knees now, which is not a dignified position for someone of my age ... HELP!

Leave the carpet, they must have seen it when they viewed.

How did you get on with the dirty mares toilet ?

WigWamBam · 20/11/2006 17:28

Will be going and tackling it tomorrow ... where's the bleurghch emoticon when you need it?

I don't like to leave the carpet as it is. They've seen the house but I don't think the mould was as bad when they saw it as it is now - the house being empty and closed up seems to have made it worse.

Although if no-one knows how to clean it, I don't think I've got much choice!

what colour is the carpet ? Could you try a weak solution of bleach or bio washing powder ? Chances are they'll rip it up anyway

WigWamBam · 20/11/2006 17:34

It's a pale green colour, quite a long pile.

They'll probably rip it out, but I don't want us to end up with the bill for replacing a carpet that probably looked OK when they viewed the house three months ago!

Will try some washing powder, see if that shifts it. It doesn't have to get rid of it for good, just make it look clean for now, if you see what I mean.
