Getting fishy smell out of rug

Thanks to a comedy mishap involving a dropped jar of pickled herrings, my lovely sitting room rug stinks to high heaven. I took it outside and washed it with fairy liquid and water followed by a specialist carpet spot cleaner. It's still outside in the garden as the smell is lingering. I was thinking of getting some Febreeze and bicarb of soda tomorrow and attacking it with those. Does anyone have any bright ideas about what might work?

It's a flat weave by the way and can't be machine washed.

Yes to bicarbonate of soda. Maybe dampen rug a little first, then pour on loads and leave it for a day, then Hoover off.
I made a mix of 1:10 lemon oil and water in a spray bottle as a sort of natural cleaner; it works brilliantly for freshening up the loo.. I know lemon is great for neutralising fishy smells so maybe try a bit of that after the bicarb.

I had a comedy Worcester Sauce incident in the boot of a car, I took the carpet out and hung it over a wall, hosed it down repeatedly and let it dry in the sun. It was quite a durable material so the hosing didn't seem to harm it.

Smells seem to reduce as the fabric dries out.
