How to get rid of smell of smoke?

I bought a pair of curtains for a bargain price today but they stink of smoke. I washed them immediately and they're still on the line to air. The forecast is good for tomorrow so I can leave them on the line tomorrow too. Beyond that, is there anything else I can do to get rid of the smell? I can't stand Febreze etc so would prefer a natural solution. Any ideas?

A strong solution of bicarbonate of soda and water in a spray bottle applied liberally? You'll have to wash them again afterwards though as the dried bicarb will look powdery. Do you mean cigarette smoke btw?

Bicarb = baking soda, rather than soda crystals which are good for general cleaning/degreasing purposes, but you wouldn't cook with them!

Some of my early baking efforts might as well have had soda crystals in them, they tasted so bad, wowfudge!!

Did I say the forecast was good for today? Because it's been lashing rain all day and my curtains are still out there on the line but that can only be good for them, right??

The rain will wash away the bicarb I'm afraid if you've already sprayed them.
