Does being tidy come naturally to you?

Been thinking about this today.

I am just not naturally tidy. I am absolutely useless at putting things away after I have used them. I leave things all over the place, and then moan when I can't find them. I know it's sheer laziness and I'm making more work for myself in the long run, but that's the way I am.

Don't get me wrong - my house is generally ok for someone with two young children. But I do tend to leave it until it's getting on my nerves before having a blitz and tidying up/cleaning!!

But it just doesn't come naturally. Do you think there's a way of making it become natural?

No

I am in no way naturally tidy

I also go for the blitzing approach

moondog · 19/11/2006 21:31

Yes it does now.
Didn't used to but years of living with a very organised man has changed me.

It hinders me sometimes.I can't go to bed or leave the house unless everything is just so.
Am bordering on OCD....

Carmenere · 19/11/2006 21:32

No I am really really crap at tidying, it takes a huge effort for me and I hate it

Yeah tidy more
When i first moved in with dp we lived like slobs ,i mean really untidy and it was depressing and even our dog was pissed off.
So finally we got our act together and slowly but surely we became tidy
That was over 10 years ago and to be honest im probably too anal about it now.

ilovecaboose · 19/11/2006 21:33

I don't know but if you find it tell me please!

I am like you, but its not that I mind cleaning so much, I actually enjoy it sometimes. I just am not naturally tidy.

My mum and dp's mum both are - neither us or our siblings are. I think it skips generations (this is my excuse). Cos

my mum = neat freak and so are her 4 siblings. Their mum definately wasn't and neither are her siblings.

my dad = not naturally tidy (though he does try), but his mum was. His (10) siblings are mostly untidy.

Therefore it is not my fault I am untidy, it is my mum's fault for being a neat freak. Therefore ds should be (by my calculations) a neat freak and do it all for us as soon as he gets old enough.

Does that help

hulababy · 19/11/2006 21:33

It does nowadays yes. I think that since living in the apartment, where we had very limited storage, I got used to having to be tidy. the living space was all open plan, bar the bedrooms so everything was either tidy or on show.

Now, at the house, everything has its place and we have much more storage - so I can indulge being tidier for a while.

popsycal · 19/11/2006 21:34

I am with you Jones
although I am improving
what is making a bit of a difference is forcing myself to develop habits for the basic stuff...
dishwasher immediately filled and emptied
same with washer
hoovering at the end of the day
toys having a home
if i can get the basics pottering along , i can do the blitzing approach on the bigger stuff

Ellaroo · 19/11/2006 21:35

Think yourself lucky. When you have a natural bent towards tidyness it can torment you. Although it must be frustrating to not be able to find things quickly I think a lack of care about things like that probably makes for a more chilled out happy person

NomDePlume · 19/11/2006 21:35

Yes I am. Dh is too

moondog · 19/11/2006 21:36

It's easy.
You do a huge tidy/sort out and find a place for everything.
Thereafter everything has its place and a place for everything.
Voila

expatinscotland · 19/11/2006 21:37

Yes.

My PND is characterised by anxiety. Clutter and mess hightens that.

Sorry that should be yes I am naturally tidy..

JonesTheSteam · 19/11/2006 21:39

I'm like you, ilovecaboose.

I actually quite like cleaning / tidying - I find it satisfying and enjoy it. But I can't do it as I'm going along. Seem to be stuck in the 'leave-it-and-blitz-later' approach!!!

And Moondog - things do have a place - but I just don't put them back there LOL!!!!

I'm ruthless about clutter.

We give a bag to charity almost every week.
