Using bicarb to clean the carpet

I have seen this advice given often on MN - a paste of bicarb rubbed into the carpet is supposed to lift smells from it. The other day, ds3 spilt pink flavoured milk on a beige carpet and it smelt awful so i thought I would give it a go. Well, the smell is gone certainly, but I now have a dreadful white stain where the paste was rubbed in.

What have I done wrong/not done?

Did you hoover it out afterwards, DG? It shouldn't stain so that's propably just the white powder residue.

Thanks for replying Janh. I did hoover but it made no difference.

What I did was mix bicarb with water to make a paste which I then daubed all over the carpet. Was I not supposed to? Was I supposed to use dry bicarb? I am confused about this!

Anyway, looks like I will have to get a carpet cleaner now to get rid of the carpet cleaner!

No, making a paste is right - never heard of it staining before

How about wetting it again and spreading it out a bit more - see if that makes any diff?

I will be doing all sorts as soon as I can summon up the energy to tackle it! I hate dealing with stains on the carpet and feel a bit peeved that this one came about because I was trying to prevent another. Srill, better to find out this happens now with the spilt milk than to end up with a stain marking where someone vomited....yeuch!
