So, did the Kondo method work for you? Or am I just wasting money buying another book to stuff into my overflowing bookcase? Thanks!

It's a wonderful book. I love the bit about getting rid of unread books - something like 'the purpose of the book is to teach you you don't need it'. I'm still awash with stuff, but that's changing month by month, and I've got a much more thoughtful perspective on it all. Off to get rid of some more...

My drawers have never been so ordered and tidy with such little effort. I laughed when I first read about how to sort and store clothes but amazingly it works well.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2015 21:18

I'm impatiently awaiting the arrival of my copy. Dying to get blitzing.

atticusfinchatemybaby · 24/06/2015 21:38

I'm intrigued by this but afraid buying the book is just adding another bit of clutter to the house! And no matter how life-changing it is, surely no tidying method can be complex enough to require a whole book to explain. Can anyone summarise the idea for me?

Iggi999 · 24/06/2015 22:06

Don't choose what to throw out. Choose what to keep. Only keep it if it brings you joy.

JamHoneyMarmite · 24/06/2015 22:13

Also - don't approach it by room, do it by category. The theory being that if you do all the clothes in your bedroom, you may well later discover more clothes in the bathroom, living room, hallway, car...and then your tidy bedroom clothes will be messed up again instantly. So for whatever category you're doing, you get it ALL together before you start sorting out which items bring you joy and so you keep. And no buying more storage until the chucking out stage is done (and then you tend to find you don't need more storage after all).

The book is a good, endearingly bonkers read though - worth borrowing a copy at least!

Thanks - will check it out...

Hmmm... I think my problem here is that I'm sentimental about everything so it all goes in the last category for me. There are clothes I will definitely never wear again but I love them for the memories they hold so I can't throw them away. Aaaagh.

MangoBiscuit · 25/06/2015 07:12

atticus, when I did my clothes, I split it into sub-groups to make it more manageable, and some went into the sentimental group. My cross-country colours are definitely sentimental, but as I no longer ride, not likely to be used. After kondoing I realised that, actually, it's wearing them that bring me joy, and flood me with memories, not looking at them. So my wardrobe now has another "jumper" that fits my post-baby bust (apparently it takes up as much room as my body protector! Hmm ), that makes me grin when I put it on.

27inmyhead · 25/06/2015 07:17

I found it brilliant although I have come to a standstill. It worked for me on clothes, books, DVDs, and kitchen stuff. I have got a bit stuck on paperwork because that requires thinking.

I also think the 'does it spark joy?' question has given me permission to get rid of stuff that I couldn't justify throwing away eg things an ex gave me like perfume, a necklace, a cd. I didn't get the guilt.

I haven't missed anything I have thrown away either.

LadyBez · 25/06/2015 11:59

Hiya,

Can I just ask if you have the short version of the book or the long?

Cheers

poocatcherchampion · 25/06/2015 19:55

The book is pretty short and took me about 1h to read if that.

I have enjoyed it because it has given me permission to get rid of things that font give me joy. Inc - Guinea pigs!!! Old wedding outfits, bridesmaid dress I I'll never fit or wear again, presents I dislike from people I love... Etc

We were quite tidy but holding on to a lot of guilt. And now I am freeeeeee!

Woooooohoooooo · 25/06/2015 22:36

Lady follow the link. It covers it. The folding you can read up about online in the 8th kondo thread

I read the book in under 2 hours and just loved it! It's certainly bonkers in places but there's so much good advice in it, its well worth the time spent reading it. I couldn't wait to get started and it took a whole day just to sort my clothes. I filled 8 bin liners with the stuff I parted with and 3 months on, I haven't missed a single item. I'm left with just the stuff I really love and it has given me new perspective when shopping. I ask myself if I really love something now before I buy it and keep a photo of those 8 black bags on my phone to remind me of all those purchases that I just didn't want. I wear my lovely items every day now instead of keeping them for special occasions and get much more joy from my wardrobe. Really enjoying this thread as its great to hear how others are getting on.

It made my house move so much easier. Pre decluttering we were looking at hiring men with a massive van but post decluttering we were able to do it ourselves with a much smaller van

ememem84 · 28/06/2015 09:57

I read it. But didn't follow to the letter. I totally understand the concept but couldn't be as ruthless as to get rid of it all.

It's taught me that I have way too much stuff and placed a lot of importance on having said stuff. So I'm now more careful when buying things. Only buy if I absolutely love it. And need it.

whiteiris · 28/06/2015 11:11

The bit about giving you permission to get rid of gifts was great.

LilRedWG · 29/06/2015 13:01

My house is really getting me down atm. What with one things and another it's got in a real state. Crap everywhere and nowhere to store it. Has anyone else been in this state and sorted it out?
