How do you stores your wine?

I realise that this is the epitome of a first world problem..... But how do you store your wine? I get boxes delivered every few months and inevitably buy the odd bottle here and there, or too much for a party. At the moment we just shove it in boxes in the garage, but can't see what's in there. We don't really have space in the house. We are redoing our kitchen/utility so could possibly fit in a wine cooler, but not sure we could afford it and also that would only store a few bottles of White, right? I suppose if I stopped buying wine for a year I could buy a wine fridge.... Hmmm

Interested to hear what everyone else does.

I live with 10 mins level walk of 3 supermarkets, 25 mins level walk of 2 more and drive past them all on my way hone from work, so one of everything works well for us BTW.

I would love a cellar. Sadly we are in a 70s house and so it's not happening! I also couldn't imagine only buying wine when I need it. I find you can get decent bottles at good prices via wine clubs so always have a couple of boxes around. Massive Wine rack in garage I think is the answer.... That won't be too cold for storage will it?

It depends whether you are buying good stuff that you need to keep for a while, or stuff that you can 'drink now'. The important thing with wine is that you maintain a constant temperature for it. The ideal is about 13- not to hot, not too cold (most white that comes out of it is perfectly drinkable and in fact we often drink white too cold), most reds need a little time to come up a little warmer. Damage can also be done by sudden elevations in temperature.

I guess it really depends what you're spending on wine and whether you're prepared to pay for storage. If you going to invest in wine storage like a cabinet or fridge you certainly need to ensure it suitable for use in a garage.

I've got one a bit like this one but definately cleared for the garage.

If it is anything like our garage it will be far too cold in the winter and too warm in the summer. The temperature variations won't be good for the wine at all.

Thanks so much everyone. To be honest I had never even thought about the temperature of the storage before this thread. Just the temperature to drink it Grin
This definitely needs to go on the to do list now - bigger (and more expensive!!) job than I initially thought...
