Which boxes for storing old clothes please?

I am doing a big clothes sort-out and I now want to store some clothes away on a permanent basis, as I like to keep a few sentimental bits in a kind of archive.

I would like boxes. But which ones? 'Really Useful Boxes'? Something else?
The other thing is don't plastic boxes give off noxious fumes? Or are there things I can do to avoid that?
thanks.

What about those plastic bags that you hoover to get the air out?

ADachshundNamedColin · 08/05/2015 09:35

I would use the vacuum bags. They use up less space and cut down on the likelihood of moths which undisturbed clothes can attract.

Thanks, but for some reason I have never liked the idea of the vacuum bags. I have the storage space for boxes so that is not a problem.

plastic crates are fine, with close-fitting lids. Put a moth-killer (not just a repellent) inside each crate.

Unless you are planning to climb into the crate and shut the lid, I don't think you will be affected by any odour from the plastic.

noxious fumes from plastic boxes??? Evidence please.

raggy old clothes stored for years will exude far worse.

Don't use plastic for long-term storage. The plasticisers will leach out as the plastic degrades over time and damage your clothing. Use acid-free "archival" boxes and acid-free tissue paper. You can get these from companies like Conservation By Design, or Ryders. They aren't cheap, but will last for ages.

How long do you think it will take?

I have seen PVC cable sheath and insulation (contains plasticisers) which is 50 years old and still in perfect condition.

Storage crates are often made of polythene, I am not aware that it contains plasticisers.

Just to update, in case anyone is interested.

In the end I went for 'Really Useful Boxes', but gave them a good wash before use to remove that new box smell. I lined with acid-free tissue and put more layers of tissue between my clothes.

All seems well so far. I will update in 20 years!
