same colour carpet throughout house?

I can't decide what to do about this.

At the moment we have different coloured carpets in all the rooms. I'm lucky to be able to afford to redecorate throughout ( all really shabby and hasn't been touched for years as we were working abroad ) and am wondering about having the same colour of carpet everywhere.

Slightly difficult as it's an old house with fireplaces with various colours of tiles in three rooms, and stained glass windows in the hall .. and I'd have to find a neutral shade to suit all of these. Not too light either or it would be grubby in no time.

It seems that one colour throughout is popular at the moment, and I think it would make the house feel less "bitty" and the feel of the rooms flow together better.

I know that the carpet is the last thing you buy when redecorating but I'm finding I can't make decisions about wallpaper or curtains and blinds until I have a rough idea about the flooring. So I'm stuck at the moment!

Or is one colour in all the rooms boring? What do you have and does it work for you?

I chose one colour throughout and when the company came to measure I got a large discount as it equated to a whole role, they also did a room or two at a time and held onto the rest until needed so we didn't need to finish the whole house in one go. I think we got lucky but it worked out well and I think it has helped the look of the house too.

I too chose one colour throughout (but we have solid wood in the dining room and tiles in the kitchen) it seemed a sensible choice as I wanted a neutral colour and I also got a decent discount

Another one here same colour carpet
througout (beigey/grey), much more cohesive look we have patterned tiles in the hallway easier, to keep clean, & if you have different coloured tiles etc in various rooms, would be easier to match/contrast with curtains, cushions, etc rather than different coloured carpets.

Yes go for one colour throughout. We bought our last place and it had 5 different colours, each bedroom matched the painted walls, downstairs a different colour, and landing/stairs different again. It looked a mess and was the first thing we changed out.

My parents had all blue-grey downstairs and all grey upstairs. (Stairs were plain wooden) I think it worked well, they did get bored of it after 10 years but you would anyway really.

We have the same colour throughout the house, in a neutral shade. It's a mid-toned brown/grey sludgy heathery colour. Goes with pretty well everything. It's not an exciting colour; quite the opposite in fact! But it works for us. Our walls are all fairly pale, so the carpet recedes and allows the walls and curtains to make their statement.

Thanks all - quite a consensus here that one colour throughout is the way to go! I like carpets to be unobtrusive so will start the hunt for a workable neutral colour tomorrow Smile

we have just got a new carpet throughout. went for grey and it looks fab everywhere and goes with pretty much any colour

Yes, I would. We have the same carpet in our lounge, hall, stairs, landing and one of the bedrooms (put in by previous owner). It does make it flow more.
