Hello, I always thought you should wash towels on the hottest wash they can stand so I wash on a 90, , my new ones say to wash at 40, will they still be as clean do you think?

I occasionally wash my towels at 90 degrees but usually at 60 degrees. I never wash them at less than this, even the ones that say to wash at 30 or 40 degrees and they are all fine.

Please don't sue me if your bath sheets come out of the washing machine the size of a face cloth Smile !

wowfudge · 20/04/2015 21:42

I agree with Wendy. DP has a towelling dressing gown which says wash at 40 degrees. I bung it in with towels at 60 and it's fine.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/04/2015 21:45

How dirty do you think towels are? They're drying something cleanGrin

iwouldgoouttonight · 20/04/2015 21:51

I've never washed a towel hotter than 40°. We're all still alive.

WhereYouLeftIt · 20/04/2015 22:05

I wash at 40, never felt they were less than clean.

wowfudge · 21/04/2015 07:26

Towels should be washed at high temperatures because they are breeding grounds for bacteria - warm and wet, often for a long time before they dry between uses; if indeed they do actually dry completely between washes.

Fine if you think yours are clean at 40 degrees, I'm not going change what I do!

LetThereBeCupcakes · 21/04/2015 08:51

I put mine on a 90 degree wash once a week. DH seems to be challenged in hand-washing and frequently smears mud all over them. Hmm

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/04/2015 08:57

I stopped wasting my money on 60 degree washes after reading this

Which magazine.

FromAtoZ · 21/04/2015 13:04

40 degrees is sufficient enough. If your worried about bacteria get detol antibacterial laundry cleanser.

We only use towels once in this house as well

BasinHaircut · 21/04/2015 14:59

Depends how dirty they are I suppose.

I only wash towels once per week and chuck all of the tea towels in with them too, so I do it on a 90 degree wash, add soda crystals and white vinegar and use it as a sort of maintenance wash for the machine too.

I think 90 degrees is necessary as some of the towels will have been damp and festering in the wash basket for a few days, but those who wash after each use and put said wash on every day will probably be OK washing on 40.

crappyday · 21/04/2015 15:00

Do people not hang towels up after using them? They don't stay damp all week...

ASuitableGirl · 21/04/2015 15:04

I wash mine at 40. Hang them up inbetween being used. We seem to be ok here.

BasinHaircut · 21/04/2015 15:15

crappy yes I hang them up after use.

DH however has other ideas!

BlueBee · 21/04/2015 18:25

Hmmmmm bit divided then, Maybe I'll do 60 then Grin

I do a 60 wash for coloured towels but I do put my white towels through on a 90 wash as it keeps them looking their whitest.

I've always found towels feel much cleaner & fresher when done on a hot wash. I do bedding on 60 too.

LoisEinhorn · 24/04/2015 16:49

I always do my towels, flannels and tea towels on 90c

PuppyMonkey · 24/04/2015 16:53

Do you know, I've never washed anything any higher than 40 degrees, not ever. I am a MN freak.Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/04/2015 17:08

Puppy-I only do bedsheets on a 60 and that's because it's recommended everything else is done on 30 or 40 or hand wash.
