Decluttering - old books.

The arrival of DC2 later this year has necessitated a huge declutter which will allow DC1 to move into the spare bedroom also known as the dumping ground.

What can I do with 2-300 books (novels and cookbooks, paper and hard back) that I have no intention of re-reading or using again? There are too many to leave out for the recycling collection and if rather do something useful with them if possible, or rehome them.

Many thanks

Libraries take books in good condition
Charity shop?

Oxfam

Our local tip has a big bin for books which then go to charity.

Quite a few national trust properties have second handbook shops and welcome donations.

Wonderful - I think I could probably do all of those! Now, to sort out my evident hoarding issues.

Thank you all.

Oxfam gave DH a set of sticky labels for our "bags of stuff" (I think we gave them our address so they could gift-aid donations). About 18 months after the first blitz (which seems "amateur" compared to what we ought to do), they dropped us a not to say how much they'd raised.

I had a friend who volunteered for one of their shops nearby; I'd observe that Oxfam seemed pretty switched on at identifying rarer/valuable things to sell online or in specialist branches.

Are you near a Books For Free centre:

If you would prefer common books to get reused rather than pulped they are a good bet. Some places have more local projects like regular charity book sales in church halls, free libraries and other places where people can bring and take books.

Not many local libraries take old books, but best to check locally.
A lot of charity shops don't want books or sell most of them on for pulping or to companies like World of Books who put them on Amazon for 1p. Other than the rarer titles.

Our village phone box has been decommissioned and acts as a mini library. People put books in there and borrow from there too,it is really useful.

Our local hospice has a bookshop which loves donations of books - but any charity shop would be glad of them.

Our village has a post office library. We all drop off/collect books.

I love a good declutter Grin
