Does a cheap dishwasher smell more than an expensive one?

Our dw was put in by the house builders. Unless it's just finished a cycle and is full of clean crocks it smells. It is a very cheap Elextrolux model. It's got the worst washing performance I've seen.

My mothers dw in the 70's washed better than this Elextrolux.

Our previous dw was a top of the range Bosch logixx. It never smelt when it had dirty dishes in it. Every month it would have a service cycle when I opened it and thought "ooh it's got that dishwashery smell I'll do a hot cycle".

Everything else is the same. Same cleaning products. Same dw freshener. Same service wash every month.

So, do cheap ones smell?.

I think it might be that a crap dishwasher smells more! We have one that cost £250 (I think). It only smells if something in it has had strong smelling food on it and even then only when you open it and the door is only put too when it isn't on. There has never been any other kind of smell from it.

I think they are bit like washing machines and I never close the door on either unless they are in operation as it allows air to circulate and stops residual water inside them from going stale.

We just bought a house and there was a cheap Beko one left in the kitchen. It doesn't smell bad at all, and the dishes are spotless after it.

Have you tried googling the make and model to see if there are any complaints?

I looked up a which report on Elextrolux and they score 40% or so.

I'm buying a Miele one in the next few months so I'm hoping that will be like the Bosch was.

My Miele doesn't smell at all.

PigletJohn · 18/04/2015 10:59

does it smell of plastic, or of food scraps, or of drains?

lbnblbnb · 18/04/2015 11:04

Er, have you cleaned the filter? Smile

rabbit123 · 18/04/2015 11:28

It could just need a clean. Try running a dishwasher cleaner through it on the hottest cycle and rinse the filters under the hot tap

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/04/2015 11:57

It gets cleaned once a week, the filters done every week.

It smells of food but we scrape the plates, I've always scraped them.

It's being sold when we buy the Miele. Feel a bit guilty selling it because it's rubbish but I can't afford to just throw it out.

The only thing that's changed is the machine. That's why I'm hoping the new one won't smell.

We had an Electrolux one put in by the builders and it was truly awful in every way. It lasted 10 yrs and then I bought a cheap Beko one which is fantastic. I never realised in all those years how poor my dw was. I thought they were all like that but now my dishes are always clean, it doesn't smell and after I've emptied it it is clean and shiny inside unlike the Electrolux which always looked as if it needed cleaning especially around the seal. Just waiting for my Electrolux oven to finally die so I can justify replacing it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/04/2015 18:10

Yes! The seal does get mucky. Did it only take two plates, a cup and a tea spoon before being full so you had to put it on twice on the weekends?.

I've smuggled extra dinner sets in for when the Miele arrives. Wilkos smart price Blush

I can't wait 10 years, it's me or the dishwasher.
