the down has collected in a clump inside one end of the stand up collar, the rest of the collar is empty. not to mention empty pockets around the rest of the jacket.

washing instructions were followed to a tee.

is there anything I can do Sad

I am told (though I've never tried it) that you need to tumble dry it with a couple of new, clean tennis balls to fluff it up again. Worth a try?

crabb · 10/04/2015 09:29

Is it tumble dry-able? You tumble dry down sleeping bags, along with something like a clean tennis ball, to thump the down clumps apart and fluff the down up again.

Snap!

Pop it on a cool cycle in the dryer with something lumpy - I use a clean trainer or a tennis ball would work as Gymbob said. Comes up a treat.

RatOnnaStick · 10/04/2015 09:30

The down is all wet and sticky. It definitely needs to be tumbled and the tennis ball thing does seem to work. When its dry and all the filling is looser you can shake it all back into place. It takes a bit of work but it will come out ok.

Gymbob · 10/04/2015 09:52

thanks all, I've done the tumble drier and tennis ball trick, the clumps haven't shifted Sad

It is because the down is not dry so you need to rub ir massage the clumps so that they spread out and put it back in tge dryer. You have to keep on doing this until it is dry and you won't have clumps anymore. Tedious but it works.

homeaway · 10/04/2015 09:58

Excuse the typos.

This happened to me and I used the tennis balls but I ended up putting it on the line all day despite thinking it was dry then gave it a really good shake put it in dryer agin with tennis balls and put it on cool for an hr. Removed it gave it a good shake and it's like new. I'm guessing despite thinking the feathers where dry they probably weren't dry enough. Hth

crabb · 10/04/2015 10:03

Yes, yes, re pulling it out and using your hands to pull apart the clumps, the back in the dryer. You just have to keep at it.

Gymbob · 10/04/2015 12:33

I am so completely dumb. I let it drip dry on the line first, then put it in the drier when it was dry Blush

You have to tumble dry (pref from wet) to re-loft the down. But it with a couple of clean tennis balls in the drum as they pound and fluff it as it dries.

Gymbob · 12/04/2015 14:35

thanks all, it doesn't look and feel too bad now!

There's special lumpy rubber tumble drier balls you can buy if tennis balls aren't working..

Gymbob · 12/04/2015 20:56

I think I need a special tumble drier ball. I might not be as reluctant to wash it next time. I was dreading washing it anyway, as kind of knew what would happen. I'm no domestic goddess!

I have quite a few down jackets and that one is the first I've washed. need to pluck up the courage to do another, but will see if I can find one of these balls first, they sound like a really good idea Smile

I did that too.
I did the best I could to distribute the feathers when they were wet. Took ages.
The instructions on the coat say 'do not tumble dry'
Then I put it in the tumble dryer with a tennis ball on the low heat setting and tumbled it. I stopped it every twent minutes or so and shook it.
Voila... perfect.
Good luck.

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 13/04/2015 20:15

Instead of tennis balls, try a (very clean) trainer or two

They're more angular & do a great job IME Smile

TheOneWiththeNicestSmile · 13/04/2015 20:16

Bloody noisy though - shut the door on the room it's in, or go out Grin
