What size dining table?

We are moving house soon, and I need to buy a new dining table.
What do you reckon is the smallest table size to seat 6/8 regular, 10 at Christmas?
thanks.

Our dining table is 100 cms x 220, with 2 additional extension leave of 50cms each. That seats 6 -8 when not extended, and seats up to 12 when extended. It does take up a lot of room when fully extended. I think if you only wanted to seat 10 you could get away with a table which is 280cms when extended.

We used to have a table that was 180cms when not extended. That seated 6 very comfortably, but would have been a real squeeze for 8.

How much room do you have, and how often do you need to seat 8 people?

Thanks. New dining room is 3.57 x 3.10 (11'8" x 10'2").
I am panicking that it is too small to fit 10 people in.

I would like to be able to seat 8 (2 families of 4) on a weekly basis say.

That's a big dining room, you'll be fine. 8 is a pretty normal number to fit round a table, and when it's 10, people don't mind being a bit squeezed. An oval shape would help, or using some bench seating for the kids if you're worried. Most 'full size' dining tables seem to be 180-200cm, and with an extender I think that will be fine for normal use.

I googled for the most extending small table I could find. We went for a Mark Harris rustique, that extends from 150cm- 195 or 240cm. There are also bigger versions, 180-270cm which should cover most requirements, or an even bigger one I think. We can seat 6 on the 150cm table or 10 on the extended one. I reckon with smaller chairs we could squeeze a couple more on in a pinch. It does depend how big your chairs are and whether you mind someone sitting round a table leg.
