Towels! Is there a secret to knowing what to buy??

I'm desperate for new towels because old ones dont go with the new decor but new ones bought previously don't actually dry as well as the old (especially for hair drying)
They're made from the same stuff so I'm confused as to what to look for - is there some sort of secret?? Help please I'm finding it irritating having things mismatched!

Mremeerkat, can you post a link pkease to the Ikea ones you recommend? I had a browse on their site and don't quite know which ones you mean. Thanks.

Good savings on HoF!
Sheridan and Christy in TkMaxx decisions decisions!

Primark! Never thought of getting towels from there - thanks

John Lewis ones are good.

Never get the ones with soft velour on one side (like they have on swimming towels) always get the traditional loopy finish.

SwedishEdith · 08/04/2015 23:06

Hmm, I got some Christy ones on TK Maxx. The thread that has been used on that flat bit near the end is clearly not cotton/shrinkable cotton because they're all puckered and don't fold flat - and that really bugs me. I think I'm finally realising that thinner towels dry better.

SweetAndFullOfGrace · 08/04/2015 23:06

Buy linen towels. They are AMAZING. Dry much better than cotton ones, plus they don't stay damp - I can wash ours in the morning and then hang up in the bathroom and they're dry by night time. No more tumble drying. They get softer with age too.

I also have loads of the Costco ones there great! And have lasted for years.

Notso · 09/04/2015 09:33

I've just had a look at Turkish towels on Amazon. They get fab reviews and cone in lovely colours. I might try a couple.

FelixFelix · 09/04/2015 09:37

We are in need of new towels too. I am trying to convince DP to renew our Costco membership!

We bought microfibre towels for camping which have made their way in to our everyday bath towel pile as they are so absorbent and dry really quickly. The feel of them freaks me out though!

ChishandFips33 · 09/04/2015 10:19

Notso They look great dont they - some designs are almost too nice to use!

The Turkish ones are a lot more absorbent than you would think. I bought one and tried it out at home first, thought they were so good I bought a few more. You must wash them before you use them and they get better the more you use and wash them.

Notso · 09/04/2015 18:56

I know ChishandFips they are lovely.
I don't know why I am so sceptical either. I use muslin cloths all the time for mopping up spills etc and I used to use them as nappies so I know that thickness doesn't always mean more absorbant. I'm def getting them, it's payday tomorrow!

Righty...been to TkMaxx and hedged my bets a bit

I now have one hammam towel (though it's currently looking beautiful as a throw on the couch!) one turkish pestemal towel (slightly different texture to the hammam) and one Christy - picked the one that felt 'rough' as that's how my effective towels feel (lovely looking like new rubbish ones still feel soft despite having them years!!)

None go with anything in the bathroom or with each other but if they work I don't care and will keep them out of sight but only when people visit and the beautiful useless ones on show!

Oh and the Turkish ones were £13 for a 100x180cm and £15 for the 180x180cm one - slightly cheaper online but I have nil patience!

Matalan towels, the luxury Egyptian cotton ones (not the cheaper versions) are fab! I bought a whole load and they are heavy enough to feel luxurious, but light enough to not take an age to try, and fluffy.

pinkfrocks · 09/04/2015 20:15

we always buy from John Lewis - usually wait for an offer.
Always white but have to replace very couple of years or so as they go grey.

ChishandFips33 · 09/04/2015 22:26

White really does scare me! One of the new turkish towels has a little bit too much in it and I'm thinking I might have to return and swap it.
Pondering if I use it on holiday will suncream come out!! I need a life!

OP posts:
pinkfrocks · 09/04/2015 22:51

Well I'd not use white towels when using sunscreen - I'd have beach towels for that in a darker colour.
We have white towels for home, and darker plain ones for sport at the gym, and beach hols.

KatharineClifton · 10/04/2015 19:34

Got mine from Wilkos. Wasn't expecting much tbh but they are great. Went back and bought more.

fussychica · 11/04/2015 17:51

I always go for the least fluffy towels in the shop, never use fabric conditioner or dry them in the tumble drier. Never had any problems with absorbancy sticking to these rules.

Yellowaveo59 · 11/04/2015 17:58

Agree with Superherosidekick John Lewis 100% Eygptian Cotton all the way. Still going strong after 8 years
