You used to be able to get magic sponges in £1 shops - called magic erasers too - I think flash have a version, supermarkets probably sell them. Or you can buy from ebay etc in bulk (just watch the size - I got a batch and each one was more or less 25% the size of 'usual' ones)
They are fantastic, really useful things - but be careful they are abrasive - so whilst don't appear to 'scratch' things used frequently they will eventually eg take the top layer of paint off.
(Spot the person who used to use one enthusiastically and regularly on the dirty fingerprints on the stair wall and then one day realised the plaster was showing through!)

DSis swears by a product called KrudKutter, was advised by hardware shop to use it for cleaning kitchen cabinets before painting them. It's not made with harsh chemicals either!

Sugar soap / Sodium hydroxide / soda crystals (all the same stuff) - although can leave streaks. Most supermarkets sell it - comes in a plastic bag (dark green seems to be the most usual). Use gloves because it reacts with fat to produce soap.
Or bicarb - needs rinsing as leaves a residue and is abrasive so don't use it on high gloss surfaces.
Or Methylated spirits - stinks
Or detergent - disolved in water washing powder and bleach combo works quite well and is my favourite for general cleaner.

Final wipe over with something acidic eg vinegar, lemon juice, window cleaner and a super dry lint free cloth.
Spray on furnititure polish will also bring out the shine on chrome finishes - I use it on the kettle, toaster and taps.
