Would you use it?

Open it. Taste the oil floating on top. If it tastes rancid chuck it. It should be fine though, oils go rancid in contact with air.

Just the other day I found a jar of lemon curd well over a year past the best before date. Opened it and the butter and eggs in it had gone off - didn't smell quite as bad I thought it would though!

Thanks very much calendula and wow. Doing a long overdue cupboard clear out and it feels very liberating but a bit Blush at what I'm finding.

Smell test & expect to eat.

TheHappinessTrap · 05/04/2015 12:49

Have you tested? I would presume it's ok but would like to know the outcome of your test!

Madcats · 05/04/2015 19:44

Those jars sound positively juvenile.

Smell and taste. If it is "off", it will taste bitter/rancid (but then we have cast iron stomachs in our house).

Pusspuss1 · 05/04/2015 20:36

Yep, as long as it tastes ok!

As somebody who has been prepared for biological warfare from a young age by my mother's use of anything that cannot walk out of the cupboard under its own steam, smell it, test it. Worst it'll just taste bad it's highly unlikely to kill you.

At my mum's house when she says something is past its best the question is not which month it went out of date but which year.
