The fledglings is a long running thread based on the Flylady cleaning/tidying principles. Personally I’m a newbie with only a couple of months flying under my belt but some members of the group have been on the thread for a number of years, so the thread is a mixed group of more and less experienced fledglings. I have found myself to be very warmly received as a newbie so please don’t be scared to join the gang.

Flylady link link here.

The system initially seems quite confusing so my advice as a fellow newbie would be to just go with it and accept that you will probably feel a bit confused for the first couple of weeks and then it will start to come together and make more sense.

The basic principles are (very) loosely as follows:

  1. No perfectionism allowed (it is your enemy and it is stopping you getting anything done)
  2. Little and often is the way to go (your house didn’t get in a mess in a day, it wont get sorted in one)
  3. You are never behind, just jump in where you are (We are in a different zone of the house each week and all the house zones come round once a month, so all the tasks will come round again soon)
  4. The point of this system is that by doing little and often your life isn’t dominated by housework and you have more time to do the fun things that you’d much prefer to be doing

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's steps and routines using a three-pronged approach (dependent on the stage everyone is at):

  1. start or repeat baby steps
  1. repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  1. reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

[And if you are really enthusiastic and have finished decluttering - you can go on to detailed deep cleaning in each zone.]

More info here on getting started and on Flying lessons. Here's the launch pad for more experienced fledglings.

Later on today I will be posting up the links and information for tomorrow’s tasks

The advice from the wise and experienced members of the group is not to subscribe to the emails, but I have to confess that as a foolish newbie I do receive them Blush I have learnt to ruthlessly bin anything beyond the actual flying tasks though.

Hopefully I haven’t missed anything too important off this introduction, but I’m sure someone more experienced will pop up to supplement this information if I have.

Good luck and happy flying through April!……………..

done
spoken to dw service centre who said cost of new pump and call out would be 3/4 of price of new dw so will have to bite the bullet and organise one.

Now to do just that.

ToffeeWhirl · 09/04/2015 10:31

So sorry for the poorly DHs, Captain and Swan. Hope they improve soon.

Blue - I know what you mean (used to have a security camera in a shop I worked in which had the image of the previous shop it had been in burned into the screen), but it isn't that. The pig isn't there today, so it will probably remain an unsolved mystery.

Had loads of sleep last night. Am hoping this gives me loads of energy today.

DH has taken today off work to tackle the bombsite garden, as we are getting decking put in next week. Hopefully, we will finally have a respectable garden after that.

Just two aims today: get DS1 outside in the sunshine; get DS2 to the science workshop.

Ready meals tonight Grin.

LinzerTorte · 09/04/2015 10:45

Great news on the sleep,Toffee - getting a decent night's sleep can makes such a difference to the way you feel. (Hope you're feeling less tired today, Captain.) Hope DS2 enjoys the science workshop; a workshop sounds like fun to me, at any rate!

DEM I loved your ta da list; mine always sound very boring in comparison which is why I rarely post them.

Dogsbum How long is your DP off to India for?

SC Glad you were feeling more chilled by your last post. I can imagine what they are, but clicker and kibble sound like a foreign language to me!

Am still worrying far too much about DD1, hopefully unnecessarily. She told me yesterday that her legs felt very tired when she was cycling to school and in her PE lesson, and that she can't walk up the stairs as quickly as she used to... I wish she could have been seen yesterday but as she's not really feeling ill I could hardly insist on a same-day appointment.

Have just noticed the time - must dash to pick up DS, who's out of school in five minutes. Waves to all I've missed!

DarkEvilMoon · 09/04/2015 10:59

linzer if dd1 has grown a lot she could have problems with the muscles in her legs. Ds had to see a physio, and the physio was shocked at how tight the muscles were. He used to wake up screaming in pain and be constantly complaining about his legs hurting. Low level pain is exhausting and it might be she needs to do some exercise to support her muscles in the growth spurt stage. Might be worth seeing a good physio and getting that sorted. Ds was also hindered with a muscle inbalance that was sport related but 30mins of physio a day and he is in virtually no pain, he has more energy, and is lighter in foot again. His physio checked for uneven growth and all sorts of things that could be a problem but thankfully ruled it out. Tight muscles that are struggling to keep up with growth cause more problems than people realise.

8hrs sleep but it was 2am again before i fell asleep, despite taking something to help. Feeling tired and sluggish this morning. And i still have a really sore shoulder. I think it is a draft when I am asleep thing so going to think how to sort it. Lots to do today. CBA. So power of three

To Do
Eat breakfast
get up
put on 1 load of wasing

MrsMook · 09/04/2015 11:25

Easy day here. I've had my implant out this morning so my arm is a bit tender and throbbing. Also tired from Ds2 waking at that awkward time before you intended on waking that sabotages the last sleep cycle, and also waking randomly in the night yelling for "mummy!" loudly and insistently.

Yesterday was a good assault on the playroom, excavating and vacuuming the floor.

The Tabata timer is originally for sports with bursts of intense exercise then intervals of rest. I'm finding the timer app great for tidying. So with the playroom, I set it for cycles of 1 minute tidying/ 20 secs rest. So I'll target something like train track or duplo in the minute, and 20 seconds gives me chance to sort the next box and identify the stuff I'm focusing on for the next go. It works quite well with Ds1 (4) as he can handle a minute of looking for one type of toy, and he likes the shout of "rest".

I also use it in a house bleugh kind of way setting 4 mins to tidy and 30 secs to change room. It's enough to sling the laundry out, bin debris, do a swish and swipe and generally lift the room. Being short bursts, if I am interrupted by the DCs, I have achieved something by then.

LinzerTorte · 09/04/2015 11:27

DEM I'd assumed DD1's tiredness was connected with her other symptoms (constant thirst, dry tongue, etc.) but you're right, it could be completely unrelated and just a growth spurt. Or maybe just the exhaustion of going back to school after the holidays! Or even the fact that we'd cycled into town the day before - only about 20 minutes cycling altogether, but she doesn't do much cycling otherwise. I'll mention it to the doctor next Wednesday anyway and see what he says.

I'm also feeling quite tired and lacking in energy today; I have to go to my book club meeting tonight and really don't feel like going out, although I'm sure it will be fine once I'm there. I'll be getting the results of my blood tests tomorrow morning (annual check-up) and wouldn't be surprised to find I'm lacking in iron and vitamin D, as I've been a bit lax about taking my supplements.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/04/2015 11:34

Linzer - without wishing to be alarmist, if it did turn out to be diabetes, next Weds is a long time to wait. DH has type 1 (insulin dependent) and says that the thirst he developed was unbelievable, he was drinking and wee-ing non-stop. It doesn't sound as though your DD is that bad, but if things get any worse I would be looking for a more urgent blood glucose test, can you get them done at pharmacies there? It almost certainly isn't that, but if it is, a rapid diagnosis is important.

LinzerTorte · 09/04/2015 12:54

How old was your DH when he developed diabetes, WhoKnows? I know very little about it apart from having been at school with a boy with type 1 diabetes, and had (wrongly, I'm sure) assumed that you usually have type 1 from a fairly young age or develop type 2 as an adult. I don't know if you can have a blood glucose test at pharmacies here (she'll be having one on Wed) and she doesn't seem too bad today - drinking more than she used to, but she said she doesn't feel tired - but if she does get worse, I'll certainly try to get her seen earlier.

ToffeeWhirl · 09/04/2015 16:25

Well, DS1 refused to go out, so I didn't achieve that aim. My other aim was to get DS2 to a science workshop with me. I succeeded, but he sulked all the way through it.

DH has spent the day cutting down small trees and bushes and taking it all to the dump. He's exhausted.

Drinking Brew now and ignoring cats and DC.

Steadycampaign · 09/04/2015 16:57

Afternoon all! Hope everyone ok! I was intending to get on here earlier, but we have been taking advantage of the glorious sunshine and been out and about with the dog!

On the negative side he still pulls on the lead a lot, and I am now very wary of encounters with other dogs (small contretemps with tiny pomeranian x today). And he still hurls himself at the front door when any of us arrive (we are working on him sitting in the hall politely).

On the positive side, he is much more settled today and more tolerant of us leaving him alone. He has got the hang of sitting on command (even without a kibble treat!), has nearly got the hang of "au lit", and I can now go upstairs and downstairs without him following. (We don't want him in the bedrooms or downstairs in the vicinity of the rabbits, and we want him to go up and downstairs as little as possible anyway because it's not good for his long back!). I have also got him sitting (needs work!) at every zebra crossing and traffic light! This is very fast progress considering he only arrived on Monday!

I was a bit despondent last night because it seemed as if we had taken on such a huge ball of energy but he has really been an angel today (fingers crossed!) and I am in lurrve ... !

Also, I think he likes listening to the Archers Grin

Plus, I've discovered that lots of people are very sociable when you have a dog on the end of a lead!

[Apologies for my constant canine ramblings to anyone who is non-doggie on here! Smile]

How are all of you?

Oh dear Swan I knew your dh was ill but hadn't realised he needed hospital treatment. I sincerely hope he is OK!

So sorry that your dh is still in pain too CaptainSubtext! Hope you are feeling much less tired today! And that play-date (hate that term!) went well!

I'm adding dh to the list of poorly husbands. (He only has a bad cold/flu though.) As often posted before, dh only allows himself to be ill in the holidays and so generally is ill in the holidays! I gave him the "I'm worried about you, working too hard, delegate more, look after yourself better, take some time off" speech this morning, but it went in one ear and out the other (in fact he was checking his work e-mails while I was talking to him Hmm).

And hope all blood tests: Linzers Linzers dd and Toffees come back promptly and all-clear!!

DEM definitely agree that it is usually owners at fault, definitely not the dogs! Have just discovered that we have a wasps nest too in our garden wall - must call the exterminator! Arf at "bath filing"!! Grin Hope shoulder pain is subsiding and tiredness has worn off a bit.

Thank you very much Swan about the dog walking advice. Yes, I've been trying to say to myself that one encounters virtually no dogs off the lead! This was a very unusual situation. (I didn't keep my head at all btw as all the dog manuals I've read on line since say not to pick up your dog in those circs but heigh ho!!) Persuaded dd to come out with us today and she was wary but fine and no, we are definitely not going to be heading in "that" direction for a long time to come! Hope you have managed to have a break from the continuous choring today! And roast beef sounds delicious despite all the resultant mess!

And agree Linzer and others: it isn't very reassuring when people say "oh don't worry, he's very friendly" because you can never be cast iron sure how one animal is going to interact with another particular animal or a human on one particular day.

Sorry to hear of all these frightening encounters that various mini-fledglings have had with canines Swan Linzer and Toffee. It isn't at all good when a dog is allowed to scare a child; however friendly and well intentioned it is.

Personally I like my dogs well trained and obedient and as reliable as possible (going to take a lot of time and effort in our dog's case but it will be worth it, for his sake (the better trained they are - the more liberty you can give them) as well as everyone around us). He is such a joy to train though, very enthusiastic and as sharp as a tack. It is only now that I realise the over-bred pointers (among others) we had as children were totally "Tim, nice but Dim".

[Sorry - gone off on doggie ramblings again!!] Where was I?

Toffee arf at "pig returning to its rightful place" Grin Are you certain you haven't been inhaling too much knob polish?? Grin Wink Hope ds2 enjoyed the science workshop, despite his initial lack of enthusiasm!

Linzer sorry you are still so worried about your dd. Like DEM's ds, DD gets terrible growing pains (she gets aches and pains after ballet sometimes but the two are quite distinct). Is there any possibility of bringing the appt forward if you are really worried? Also, I hope you are able to catch up on some sleep soon too! Worrying about a child is totally exhausting!

MrsMook sorry to hear you are still suffering from broken sleep. That is very tough. Thank you for "tabata" explanation - will check it out - sounds good! I didn't believe it before starting Flylady, but it is amazing what one can achieve in a tiny amount of time!

Hope you were able to catch some more time in the sun today Dogsbum and thank you for links!

Waves to ¨Blue Whoknows Feetheart Engels Honu and everyone else!

Tomorrow’s links……

(cut and pasted from today's)

Baby-step no. 10 for Fri 10th April is the power of 15

15 minutes - you can get a lot done if you put your mind to it. i think i need to get up 15 mins earlier and add a few more things to my morning routine at the moment.

We are in Zone 2 The Kitchen this week: the kitchen

If you want to, you can declutter for 15 mins a day in Zone 2!

The detailed cleaning list (if you are at that stage) for Zone 2 is detailed

Friday's mission is clean your table and chairs

The daily focus for Friday is: declutter your car and purse

The monthly habit for April is making your bed

For a summary of the above, see the flight plan: friday's flight plan - should update after midnight I think

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 09/04/2015 22:39

well, my shift key is still not working, i cba to keep using the left one so please excuse no capitals and wonky punctuation.

A mixed day today. this morning was nice, pottered around, two loads of washing on the line, a bit of tidying etc. had decided to take the dcs 10 pin bowling at ds's request, it was awful he was arguing with dd on the way there, being ultra competitive during the games, which wasn't too bad in the first where he won, but he couldn't get going at all in the second and got angrier and angrier, it was not much fun at all. Went for lunch in the cafe, which was easier, then a nice swim and outside to find a geocache. DD saved me from getting run over, we were on a footpath leading from the sports centre through a grassy bit towards a car park, she grabbed my arm and dragged me out of the way as a car appeared on the path (no road nearby) and proceeded to scrape it's way into the car park via a lamp post, then drove off. anyway, home with more arguments in the car .

I let the dcs just watch telly for a bit till dinner and peace was restored, we all went out to a nearby green to play cricket which was nice and the day has ended with peace and calm thank goodness.

Flying wise - I have decluttered my lipsticks, I had about 35 of them, I now only have about 10. Also got dcs to sweep and mop kitchen floor, I am stepping up what they do in tiny gradual steps. dh pressure washed the patio yesterday and it looks so much better.

Linzer - dh developed T1 when he was about 21 and at university (before I knew him). I have known people who have developed it from ages 2 to 50 or so. The treatments have come on in leaps and bounds over the last few years and it has very little real impact on DH's life. try not to worry about DD.

I've got nothing much to add to the dog conversation, however ds is a bit scared of them, he hates it when they jump up (pouncy dogs is how he describes it).

Swanhildapirouetting · 09/04/2015 22:48

well a very unproductive day here except the most important thing

DH has been told there is no underlying reason for his pulmonary embolism(he had several blood clots on his lungs diagnosed just before Easter - real rollercoaster and was in Acute care for 3 days) but now they say it should be fine with the blood thinners. So he came back from hospital wiped out today but that is VERY GOOD NEWS...they say he can mobilize but still needs to keep his leg up (DVT in whole of one leg) when he is not actually moving around. Luckily he is self employed so the work side is not so stressful.

We spent a lot of today (once he came back) sitting in garden - everyone is out of synch and waking at 11am so that is deeply tiresome (lazy children - although I can remember being equally lazy myself at that age) I seem to be working tremendously hard and they are all lounging around demanding meals.

Dd hung out the washing and ds2 washed up one plate and came to Tesco with me (admittedly only to buy muffins) Ds1 did a tiny amount of homework. So badly brought up the lot of them Grin I think ds1 also went for a brief run (he claimed it was a run but I suspect it was a saunter)

Linzer in light of dh's sudden hospitalization last week I would go straight to the doctor tomorrow about dd. It is amazing how minor symptoms suddenly add up to a diagnosis which is more serious.

done
kitchen tidy
several loads of washing done
dw ordered
washed up by hand - surprisingly satisfying
wiped down sink
wiped worktops
brought in dry washing from garden
fed cats
washed lots of saucepans
gave remaining beef to a fox

Toffee oh it is torture when they don't fancy some improving activity. Is it the children he doesn't like or the institutional setting or some other aspect - that there was something else he wanted to do instead? Maybe he is just happy doing his own thing - a rare breed..

Swanhildapirouetting · 09/04/2015 22:57

whoknows now I know where I am going wrong. I have NO lipsticks boo hoo.. I did once have three which were all essentially all the same colour but then I sort of failed on the makeup front completely.

I think you are managing brilliantly with your children btw - I don't think mine would even sit in a car together at this stage Grin They all lurk in their rooms pop out for food snarl at each other - sometimes dd has a bit of "banta" with ds1 or ds1 tentatively talks about football with ds2 but otherwise....no joy ...touchy teen land... The threshold to dd's room is a sacred boundary that ds2 is on no account allowed to cross.

dd's room is more untidy by the day and ds2's room is suddenly very very tidy Shock He has been arranging things for the first time ever and looking through his stuff in a proprietorial way - hope it lasts.

ToffeeWhirl · 10/04/2015 00:10

Dogs - hope you get your phone sorted soon. I must admit, we always quite like not getting any phone calls. DH and I usually shout at the phone whenever it rings. I think we're both scarred by too many years dealing with customers on the phone.

Swan - goodness, your DH really has been in the wars, hasn't he? That sounds like very scary stuff and I'm glad to hear the hospital say it's all under control now.

You are right that DS2 is generally happy doing his own thing. This evening, I had a talk with him about the workshop and his sulkiness. He told me that the issue for him was that I booked it spontaneously without asking him first. I genuinely thought he would enjoy it as he loves scientific experiments. He particularly enjoys learning about the properties of materials (it was the first thing he wanted to study when he came out of school) and the workshop was all about this. Anyway, he has apologised for his disgraceful behaviour and I have promised to ask him first next time I consider any workshops or other activities. To be honest, I have lost any desire to attend any more such things with him after today. We do have another excursion planned which I was prepared to cancel, but he says he wants to go to that one.

WhoKnows - I now feel much better about my three lipsticks. Was feeling guilty for considering buying some lip gloss too, but I think you have just persuaded me that it's ok Smile. Sorry you had a stressful time at bowling, but good to hear the day ended more peacefully.

Managed to achieve my aim of getting DS1 outside. It was dark by the time he agreed to come out for a walk with me, so no Vitamin D, but at least he had some fresh air and stretched his legs.

Did all the washing up and left the kitchen clean and tidy. Just went back in to find that the cats had raided the kitchen cupboards again and clawed their way into various cereal packets: there were porridge oats and other cereal all over the kitchen floor.

We are going to have to fit child-proof locks.

Steadycampaign · 10/04/2015 09:47

Morning!

[Double take @ 35 lipsticks!!!!!] Glamour Puss Whoknows Wink Grin how impressively stylish! (One to match every outfit no doubt!) I feel a bit depressed now about the 3 stubby lipsticks (all in the same shade) skulking at the bottom of my make-up bag!! Grin Now you've decluttered to a paltry 10 (still pretty impressive in my bk!) I think your name will have to be changed to Whoknowswhereallthelipstickswent? Grin Grin Thank you for the links!! And that sounds really awful about you nearly being run over (what on earth did the driver think he was doing? - assuming it was a 'he' - he must have been going at quick a speed) ; thank goodness your dd has quick reactions!!

Swan Goodness! I'm so sorry that you and your dh had to go through all of that at Easter. (I'm sorry I hadn't twigged it was your dh who was ill.) You must have been so worried; especially with him being in acute care away from home. Very good to know that his prognosis is good. You must be so relieved! Wishing him a very speedy recovery.
(And remember to take good care of yourself too. As you said, it is hard when your other half is not available to do some of the small mundane tasks that nonetheless add up to quite a bit; and you are looking after them too. And you have been through a shock. So try and rest up a bit (wd it be poss to ask your cleaner to come in for an extra session for example?) I hope the dc can be persuaded to rally round a bit more once the shock has worn off!

Sorry to hear about your land line Dogsbum; hope sorted soon as it must be so inconvenient for you. Happy to do links tonight if not sorted by then.

Toffee sorry to hear that the work shop didn't go down so well (must be so frustrating after all of your efforts!) but glad to hear that your ds2 is keen to go to the next one!

Big waves to everyone else!

Running late today. Was awake from about 3 to 5 am with mahoosive palpitations (they are controlled with meds) which wasn't very pleasant, and then (very frustratingly!) slept late when I had intended to be up and about (all out of sync here too Swan!). So am now playing catch up. Oh yes, and I'm taking advantage of the predicted 22°c heat this afternoon to wash some winter woolies prior to storage.

Dh feeling very ill with bad cold/flu. I can see we're going to have to change the air tickets we have already changed owing to dd being ill! Feel sorry for dh though because he could have really done with a dose of southern sunshine, although weather lovely here too!

Steadycampaign · 10/04/2015 09:48

'quite' a speed!

Waves to DEM!

Greymalkin · 10/04/2015 12:17

I seem to have missed rather a lot on here over the last few days! Sorry for lack of proper personals, but dog attacks and car swipes sound scary, poorly DHs and DCs also pretty alarming. Really hope everyone gets back on track soon.

I'm still feeling sniffly and tired, I suspect my cold may be more of a chest infection. Yuk.

I have been fairly productive though, keeping on top of washing and general tidying. This morning I wrapped up a tonne of stuff that has sold on eBay.

But otherwise, I have been parked on the sofa watching all six episode of Wolf Hall that I'd been saving to watch once I had read the books. T'was great.

One last thing: I have my first of three interviews in in two weeks for assessing my suitability for restarting my professional training in September. I won't lie; I am bricking it!

CaptainSubtext · 10/04/2015 12:18

No flying yesterday! Or anything really other than sweeping random crap into bags to make the living room vaguely presentable!

DH promises his back is feeling better gradually so really hoping it's just a brief glitch. Just a few days of him not being able to do anything has really worn me down, partly due to the worry I think. I am definitely better than I was in the past but I feel like I can only keep on top of things once it's properly sorted to begin with IYSWIM? It spirals out of control incredibly fast though. And it seems like I can't even make a big effort for one day without paying for it physically :(

Sorry for being a mopey git am feeling sorry for myself!
