oven cleaner damage

Our oven was recently cleaned and where the substance has had prolonged contact with the handles (on gloves holding them) it has taken off the brushed stainless steel finish.

Splashes also got onto the wooden worktops and caused damage (dread to think what's in this stuff) But it's the handles dh can't cope with which look worst. Replacing them would be expensive.

Any ideas?!

Who cleaned it? Did you get someone in to do it? If so, then complain as their insurance should cover it and if not then I honestly would pay to replace the handles and pay someone else to do it next time! It's just possible accidental damage cover on your own insurance would cover this.

You have to be careful as oven cleaners are caustic - I put newspaper and dust sheets down on the floor and on the work surfaces around the cooker and have a bucket of water beside me so I can clean any spillages up straight away.

It was our cleaner, and she has said she'll pay for replacements - but they're £90 each Shock and we'd need two. so we feel awkward asking for that. I'm more annoyed about the worktops, but hopefully that'll sand out.

I read that sanding might help the steel?

When the same happened to the cooker in DS's flat ( as he was cleaning to move out ) I cheated and spread the oven cleaner all over the handles so at least they were the same colour all over.
It was such a horrible feeling when I saw the discoloured blotchy handles but he passed the final inspection and got his deposit back .
