Laundry liquids- own brand or branded?

Does anyone have any real insight into this? I used branded for years then changed to a major supermarket own brand ( Waitrose.) I've saved £££s I'm sure but towels and bedding doesn't stay brilliant white for long even though I use a 60C wash, have an expensive machine which is great, wash in small batches, line dry etc etc etc. I am now wondering if I need to go back to good old Persil or Ariel or if it's all the same really and you pay extra for branding.

I'd suggest switching to powder if you want things looking their whitest. Powder contains oxy bleach and liquids don't so it's much better for whites and bedsheets that need a good wash. Also helps keep your washer clean

Thanks. my mum uses powder and her sheets etc are much whiter. I always think it is harsh somehow- maybe not.

I usually use powder too - my own mix, which is amazingly cheap and gets whites whiter. For dark items, when soap doesn't always dissolve completely, I've been using supermarket's own brand of bio liquid, which is about £1.60 per litre and works perfectly well, although not very scented, if this is important.

Have always used Persil powder as have never found any other brand or supermarket powder compares . I wash towels and bedding at 60oC which means there are always 2-3 60oC washes per week which help minimise gunk build up in machine.
I use Persil liquid the odd times I do wool, silk and quick washes.

I use different powders for whites and colours (use colour stuff that doesn't have bleach). Liquids don't keep the drum as clean and won't be as whitening as powders as they don't contain bleaches.

Tesco or Sainsbury own brand (probably the same thing). For once, not Aldi as it STINKS of what some idiot probably thought was ' a pleasant floral scent'. The Tesco etc has almost no smell.

can't use powders due to septic tank. Washing machine cheaper to clean/fix!
