Minimalist organised wardrobe - Kondo, Project 333, DIY...

Used to hang out on the minimalism threads for a while under a different name (I am a serial namechanger Blush) but my trickiest area has been outfitting - clothes, accessories, and make up.

I managed to purge a lot of stuff that I really didn't use, got rid of 30+ pairs of shoes, a lot of cheap t-shirts, and bought nice underwear, and then just got sort of stuck.

I want a minimalist approach to these things whilst also having it all super organised. I'm looking at things like Project 333 and Lifehacker for inspiration, plus a bit of Kondo for overall organised-ness and letting go.

I also need to work out what I actually want to wear which may not be strictly GH territory but I am terrified of S&B more focused on the minimalist/organisation bit first.

I have ideas and I know DH will give me the You Can't Be Serious face (putting considerable thought into photographing all of my clothes at the moment...). So I need to share my ideas elsewhere Grin Oddly he is a source of inspiration, he just wears shirts, trousers and sometimes jeans. He has a pair of vair nice boots, some dress shoes, and a pair of casual boots. A few nice sweaters. Ties and full suits for work and formal. He always looks good and spends very little time thinking about what to wear because it all works.

Any tips, experiences, or simply willing or interested persons please feel free to join in Smile

Tired now but definitely interested tomorrow :)

This morning I thought I would get started by fixing the hem of a skirt I like so I could actually wear it. This ended with me rearranging all of the bedroom furniture so that I can access our clothing more easily Confused We have an open wardrobe so we have a certain amount of flexibility, but I moved the bed and everything. DH was a tad surprised. I did fix the hem, though.

I have started with Phase 1 (haha, as if I have this planned) - organising the space and ditching anything not lovely or useful.

So apart from moving everything, I have gone through the clothes on hangers and got rid of anything I don't actually like much or wear. Items I have more as a 'just in case', only I'm not sure what I'm preparing for Hmm Giving away a pair of unworn shoes (had them a year!). I'm thinking Kondo-style 'thank you and goodbye' to items that have served their time, I seem to forget how long I've had some things and it turns out some of them are years old and it would not be at all unreasonable to bin or replace them.

Still a work in progress but this is my first step. Even if I end up with just a few things - which I doubt! - I am just getting rid of everything that I don't love or use a lot.

I'm thinking Phase 2 of my imaginary plan will be to then look at what I'm left with and start thinking properly about if that could work as a capsule, 333-style, at least for now...

Btw I'm just on clothes and shoes right now as oddly I find that easier. Make up and accessories is going to be a bit of a tricky one Confused

I have no tips but am in a similar position. Huge name changer, kondoed my house to within an inch of its life, kondoed my clothes to the extreme, bought new knickers, now own a dysfunctional and tired minimalist wardrobe which needs overhauling. Added niggle that I want to loose almost a stone of baby weight before creating new workable minimalist wardrobe. DS is 1yr

I'm going to check out your links Grin

My gut tells me I could be happy with a very minimal wardrobe - 3 skirts, 4 trousers, 3 jumpers, 10 tops, 3 coats (waterproof coat, winter coat, summer jacket), slippers, boots, summer shoes, dressy shoes plus a couple of spares. Also Sports wear and two dressy outfits.

I think your accessories will fall into place once you've worked out your wardrobe. Can you lay each outfit out and then move the correct matching accessory to the keep pile?

Also do store items the kondo way! I had my doubts but am sold on the system now. Upright and vertical

Likewise Box, I'm losing weight, lost about 20lb so far and my goal is another 28lb, which at my current rate is something like 5-7 months from now (health issues and 2 babies close together have not done me any favours weight wise, but it is coming off Wink ).

Matching the accessories is a good idea. I have a beautiful belt which I've worn maybe once, in five years, because it just doesn't work with anything. Probably best to say goodbye if there's nothing it suits!

I really like the vertical storage. Makes things much easier to see. Will redo drawers once I've removed all of the stuff going.

Trying to be strict but still find myself letting stuff through, as in things I don't really want or need. May have to review again once I'm done for a double check.

Well done with your weight loss. What's your strategy? You're doing so well! I've upped the excersise but need to eat better.

With my clothes I had one very conservative sort out, quickly followed by a more thorough sort through everything (lots to charity shop), followed by chucking occasional random items that had fallen through the net. I need to chuck more (about half) but can't until I have replacements. I'd be naked otherwise Grin

Kondo would have you ask 'does the belt give you joy or is is actively useful?'

I'm calorie counting, I also have a Fitbit so that's how I work out how much I burn. I track on MFP but I do have some looseness - I track a rather arbitrary 2000 calories if we get takeaway! If I do 10,000 steps in a day I can eat a surprising amount and still have a deficit, not that I'm trying to stuff my face Grin but it gives me a lot of flexibility with what I'm eating which has made it very easy and sustainable for me. I'm losing about 1lb a week.

Ha, yes, nudity is probably taking minimalism too far...!

The belt gives me neither joy nor use. It is pretty Smile I shall have to rehome it.

I've never heard of fitbit, will have to look it up. I think I might calorie count a bit to reign things actually.

Absolutely charity shop the belt! How much house stuff have you got rid of so far? I started in autumn and by the new year owned about 1/3 of the original amount. Said good bye to all sorts - spares, tons of baby equipment, bags and bags and bags of clothes, toys, chairs, old tellies, wardrobes, unwanted bikes, trailers, also bedding/towels that were very much past it. Feels great!!

Ooh, I think we started the slow and steady process of decluttering about 3 years ago. Made more of a push in the last year when pg with DC2. We got rid of loads, appliances, books, clothes, furniture, china, miscellaneous stuff you just seem to accumulate from people and places. I'd say we're more or less streamlined, but I'm now thinking of a couple things that need looking at as they've since fallen out of use for us.

I did my make up and clothes before but clearly wasn't entirely successful. Weirdly I hold on to make up, even though I use just the same few things all of the time, I have one palette for more occasion-y type things but that's it, yet I have 2 large make up bags full. Hm!

I think tomorrow I will tackle my drawers where possible, cut down, then Kondo. I'm inclined to make a list (so useful that they are) so that I can number how much I have and make it obvious.
