Mould around windows

wrenster · 23/03/2015 11:52

Over the winter my windows have started to get mould around the edges. Not on the glass intself actually where the wall meets the frame of the window (we have double glazing).

I remember my Mum using a toothbrush for it but no idea what with.

Can anyone recommend anything? Thanks

Bleach.

Dip, apply, wipe away.

I use a mild bleach solution. If it's just a newish bloom of mould caused by condensation you shouldn't need to scrub with a toothbrush. Just dip a cloth in the diluted bleach and wipe.

Thanks very much, I'll give it a go. Will this work with the mould in a shower too around the sealent?

The sealant will likely need much stronger bleach if it's mildew that's stained the plastic. I use Detol Mould & Mildew spray (it's called something like that anyway - bright green spray bottle) but there are loads of different ones that are just the same thing. Leave it on for a good while and it should bleach out the marks. Might need a couple of goes if it's quite black.

I second the Mould and Mildew remover. Test it on a small part first in case it stains, and keep curtains etc well out of the way or you will get permanent bleach marks guess how I know.

I've bought some of that today too, so tomorrow I'm going to be a busy bee!

Thanks again

reducing humidity will also help. Do you drape wet washing indoors, and do you open the windows daily?

The Dettol stuff works but it smells very strong so do it when you can leave the windows open for a while afterwards!

Alternatively make a paste out of bicarb and bleach, apply withan ice lolly stick or similar and leave for a few hours, works a treat. We don't get much condensation but the silicone sealant around our uPVC frames was black in places (from the previous owners time), this has restored it to full whiteness.
