Would (or even better have) you attempt to dye a children's cotton suit jacket (dry clean only)

I've a suit that DS1 wore a few years ago. It's light beige cotton (jacket lining is cotton/poly mix)

Trouser label says washing is fine, jacket says dry clean only.

Ds2 fit said suit and might have to wear one soon but is quite different in his colouring to DS1 and as a result looks a tad washed out in light beige.

I've some navy dye here, the suit weights just under the required 600g too, and I'm very tempted to stick it all in the machine and see what comes out.

BTW I say he "might" because I don't really care if he does or doesn't wear a suit, granny would like him too though and I'm happy enough to go along with her wish, but I'd prefer it that if he does he doesn't resemble a ghost!!

So would you?

So unless you dye said suit, it's unlikely it will be worn again? If so I'd go for it. Is it a Dylon machine dye? You can use those at lower temperatures now than they used to recommend so 40 degrees I think. And you need salt to set the dye.

If there is any top stitching it is likely to be poly cotton or polyester thread which won't take the dye.

Make sure you reshape the jacket before it dries hang it on decent hanger to dry.

Suit wouldn't be used again as I've run out of sons!

Yes it Dylon. I've the salt to hand so ready to go.

There's no mention of the stitching just says "100%) cotton. It'd be the biggest gamble and the one I'm aware that could make it a bad dye job.

I think I'll just go for it tonight as I imagine getting navy buttons to swap with the existing sized ones should be an issue.

How did it go?

Polyester stitching!!

Rest of it dyed well and jacket kept shape it just got the outline of cream stitching on pocket and collar.

I'm going to let it dry and see what I think. Doesn't look the worst ever.

For one occasion of wear you could try going the stitching with a dark blue sharpie if you think it's very noticeable and want to cover it up.
