Duvet cover extension "tongue" for tucking under mattress.

This is a long-standing gripe of mine. To stop duvet hogging, we like to tuck it in at the bottom but that means we lose valuable coverage at the top!
So, inspired by another current thread, I'm asking MN to give me the benefit of their collective wisdom. All comments will be gratefully received!

I haven't used it before Angry

I once bought a duvet cover from La Redoute and that has the tucking under flap on it, fab quality and is still going strong (10+ years later!) Smile

mrsbee2be · 06/03/2015 20:13

Gozogozo how strange we both posted nearly the same at the same time!

Sgtmajormummy · 06/03/2015 20:18

Yes, I've had just one single duvet cover with a "funnel" at the bottom and shoulders to keep the quilt in. Loved it!

mrsbee2be, spooky!

I've measured the distance between the poppers (15cm in case you're wondering), the sewing machine is out and I'm ready to go. Solving a 20-year-old problem has to be empowering, not pathetic, right?

Success! It was the short end I needed, thanks [George], giving me more under-bed length. Now Peppa Pig's face isn't cut off half way and DD can snuggle more!

Would these work? I use them for our fitted sheets and electric blanket.

There's a fascinating old-fashioned ribbon shop, or should I say "haberdashery" in town where everything is kept in boxes and you have to ask. There's a good chance they will stock suspender clips or braces clips. I'm going to make two soft elastic scrunchies now, and go shopping this afternoon. Inspired by my success!

WOW Follyfoot they look just the ticket, and the clips look like the ones on braces, don't they? With the loop permanently around the foot of the bed they would just need to clip on each time. £8? Let's get two packets! Thank you. Flowers

Here are my "corner scrunchies" awaiting their mystery clips. Going out now...

Large brother in small spare bed was always a problem until I used little plastic gadgets (designed for cot covers, I think, something like solid hair rollers with an open slit horizontally). These hold a piece of duvet cover together with the raised edge of the mattress, absolutely fixed until they're slid/pulled free. I use only one at the bottom of the bed (maybe 2/3 for king-sized duvet) and one at the wall side to stop any sliding. From Lakeland I think .

Sgtmajormummy · 07/03/2015 20:59

Sounds like somebody else has come up with an ingenious solution EmNetta, I'll have to check those out.

Conversation in ribbon shop.
Me, gesturing feebly with index finger and thumb "I'm looking for some metal clips that won't pull off..."
Old crone: "You mean braces clips. 80p each dear."
So shocked I paid my money and ran, FORGETTING THE NAPPY PINS!
Sorry, Selks! Blush

La Redoute

Sgtmajormummy · 07/03/2015 21:22

Tonight I told DD she was the official tester of the new system. Her first reaction was, "The duvet's eating me alive!". We'll see how it stands up to a night of wriggling.

OP posts:
Sgtmajormummy · 08/03/2015 10:19

She got a bit hot in the night ("I remember somebody shoving me back under...." "Yes, that was me, lovie.") but everything stayed put.
Doing a bit of browsing, La Redoute got my pulse racing, but I can't justify buying any new covers, with about 4 still in their packets. Just have to do a hack with the ones I've got.
Have you seen the suspender clip corner ties? I'm just old enough to remember those flabby skin-toned instruments of torture on my grandmother's washing line and the give me the collywobbles!

The tether system certainly kept the cover in place but I forgot about opening the (ottoman) bed up at least twice a week. Classic Pinterest NAILED IT Moment! Shock

I'm sure it would work for other people, though. So it's back to the "tongue" idea. Good job I inherited a stack of barely used and perfectly laundered teatowels from my lovely MIL. I feel I'm honouring her memory...

When DC were little I bought a special duvet holder thingy. It was a piece of elastic with clips on either end to attach to duvet. Worked a treat, probably still in a drawer somewhere.

GrassyBottom · 09/03/2015 14:37

This is the same thing

AnneOfCleavage · 09/03/2015 15:02

Yes, Verbaudet catalogue do a duvet with an extra tongue flap at the bottom. DD's duvet never comes off the bed however it is harder to get the actual duvet inside on bed changing days so perhaps the clips you are trying would work better esp as you already have the duvet covers. Next time you buy though definitely look at this particular catalogue as it's an ingenious idea.

Good luck Smile

Sgtmajormummy · 15/03/2015 11:56

Just checking in for an update, one week later.

Both systems work. The teatowel under the beds makes it easier to remake them tidily. Does DS now make his bed every day? Of course not! DD's feedback is "It's great" and she does!

Apart from the momentous FAIL of not being able to open up the bed, the tethers work and I can distribute the side overhang to as much as I like and it stays that way.

My philosophy is that with a little thought I've been able to improve our lives 0.5% and that's empowering. Long live the duvet tongue hack! And thank you MN for all your help and encouragement! Flowers
