Cleaning leather sofa - steam?

I've googled but there seems to be conflicting advice about this.

Cream leather sofas that I can't get clean (the cats love laying on the backs of them Blush ) and I'm starting to get increasingly depressed when I look at them!

I've tried the fairy liquid/warm water/soft cloth method but they just aren't coming up particularly well.

I've got a vax steam cleaner - does anyone know if this would be suitable or am I likely to bugger them up?

Does anyone else have any fabulous tips for cleaning?

Any advice would be enormously appreciated. Thank you! Thanks

I have cream leather sofas and have always cleaned them like this . Fill a bowl with warm water then use a microfibre cloth wet it and wring out then rub onto cloth a bar of dove soap. Do a small area at a time rubbing the soap in then rinse it of and dry straight away with a clean towel. I find that the dove soap not only cleans but helps to soften the leather. Been doing this for 14 years on mine and they still look pretty good.By the way microfibre cloths are the best to use for this as they seem to remove more dirt.

When I had my cream leather sofa I used to use lux soap flakes and it brought it up spotless

Just put some flakes in some hot water and use a microfibre cloth then go over with clean water and dry

I've used this stuff for lots of cleaning jobs including my leather sofa which is sort of off-white rather than cream. It's called Vistal hard surface cleaner, and it did an amzing job of bringing back the original colour, the sponge gets into all the edges where the beading is and the pattern of the leather. It's seems quote expensive but it last for ages and I use it for loads of things

hot steam will cook the leather and damage it. Remember it is skin.

You can get leather cleaning kits from places that sell sofas. It is usually a soapy cleaner and a creamy dressing. Like a wrinkly face, leather needs to be kept soft. Detergents will take out the natural oil and make it crack.

Baby wipes will do short-term. you can use white or clear face soap on a damp sponge, or saddle soap if you like the smell, and wipe off with a soft damp cotton cloth.

I got some leather cleaner from amazon - a soap which you dilute with water, spray on and wipe (vigorously) off. Then an oil which prevents it drying out and gives it shine (which you also wipe off and then leave soak / dry for 12 hours).

Its labor intensive but the effects on our dark brown sofa were brilliant which had over the years had 2 kids throw crumbs / wet cereal / apple juice and yes, unfortunately, vomit all over it (obviously I cleaned up each time).

I have ikea cleaner, you put in on the sponge provided, foam it up and wipe clean. So satisfying when the sponge is black! Shock

Fabulous ideas - thank you Thanks

Hadn't thought that steam would cook it Blush - probably best avoided then....Blush

wish me luck, I'm going in....l
