HEEELLLPPP!!! Electricians needed

I s there anyone on Mumsnet who about electricity?

Earlier this year my old DW started tripping the switch in the box so we got rid of it. My MIL gave us one that she had in the garage. She couldn't remember what was wrong with it or if there was anything wrong. It never really worked properly and among other things the switch tripped. We then aquired another off Freecycle. It is quite a new one and in excellent condition. It's been working well for a couple of months then suddenly it's started tripping the switch. Arrrrghh!!! Anyone got any ideas? I need my dishwasher. Is there anyone who knows anything about electricity or has a partner who does?

When we had problems like tht it was due to dodgy wiring. We had to replace the wiring to stop the tripping. I think you should consult an electrician. It's worth it, old wiring can be dangerous.

sounds like a circuit problem to me. get an electrician

sahmtotwo · 25/10/2006 18:22

We're in a Housing Association flat so I will give them a ring and ask them then, see if they can sort it out.

If anyone else has any ideas whats causing it I'd be interested.

Have you tried anything else in the scocket that the DW has been in?

If its been ok for the last 2 months or so, then I would say its the DW!

But if you try something else in the scocket its in (ie the kettle) and that trips the switch, then its down to the scocket/wires.

I do know some bits on electricity but you have to know what I am talking about or you still wont have a clue. XP2 was good for some things lol

It's had 3 diffrent DW in it and the same thing happened with all 3. The plug is a pain to get to as it is begind the DW

I thing you are going to have to try the socket sahmtotwo as this will be the only way you can try and sort it out for yourself. Like I said before, if it works ok with something else then its got to be the DW. You could try using the DW again if it works with something else. OR use a different socket for the DW. I think its the DW as it was not a new 1 that you have. DW = water. water and electricity don't mix, and thats why its tripping the switch. Its most likely to be the element that is the problem. so it could just mean a new 1 of those and not a new DW.

Get housing association to check it out it can't be the dishwasher if you have tried three. Different things require different amp fuses. Is it the kind of socket with a fuse?

mummy23 · 26/10/2006 11:15

We had this problem when we moved to our HA property. A friend of our is an electrician and said that we needed a higher amp fuse, because there was no way that our tv, dvd player, computer, hoover, and anything else that is plugged in, in the front room would run of such a low amp, and it turned out he was right, everytime i tried to hoover whilst having the tv on, the switch would trip. So i contacted my HA regarding the matter and they sent out a electrician with the correct amp and changed it for us. Have not had any more problems like that so far (touch wood)

My dh is an electritian. I'll show him this thread when he gets in. He should know.
Def ask the housing association people to sort it for you.

sahmtotwo · 27/10/2006 00:19

Thanks for that Mummy 23. It will be interesting to see what Princessmel's DH has to say. Will ring HA after the holidays as we are out and about quite a bit atm.

Hi, My dh says it needs looking at but would like to know answer to Califorinifrights question.
Possible faulty MCB (Minature circuit breaker),
could be wrong size MCB
MCB is the switch that is tripping.

Hi Ladies,

It's just the MCB that is blowing, so will try the kettle on it tomorrow and pop to B&Q to get a diffrent one.

Thank you all for the wonderful help you've been. So wonderful to have this site to ask these sort of questions.

Cor! thanks for that. He won't get a MCB tosay then. He's going to run an extension lead to the cooker plug as that is a diffrent circuit and try that. Will let you know what happens.
