My trusty Morphy Richards steam generator iron has just died (secretly glad as the flex has been boiling hot for a while). Does anyone have any recommendations please? TIA

I have a Polti Vaporella. I bought it from an eBay trader and it was very reasonable. It looks really old-fashioned with a cork-covered handle but I find it irons really well. DH considers himself allergic to polyester Hmm so there's a lot of 100% cotton items to iron!

Thank you, not heard of that make, but there are a few on the john lewis website so must be respectable! I guess I'll have to go and find a selection and try out how they feel.

Yes, mainly for shirts here too, I don't bother with anything other than work shirts and trousers.

I've jus bought this Tefal one. I had a Phillips one before but it just died. The Tefal one is in a different league, it's cut my ironing time right down, shirts are a breeze. The tank is huge, I can iron two loads of washing without needing to refil it.

Wow that Tefal is a serious bit of kit! Great reviews by the look of it

I have a Bosch one,I'd buy it again if/when it dies.

Philips PerfectCare Aqua ECO GC8635/02 Steam Generator Iron - One Perfect Temperature - 220g Pressurised Steam Boost

It KNOWS what fabric you are ironing and uses the correct heat!!

Ooh that sounds good Davros! The Philips ones seem to get good reviews on the JL website

I am on my 4th steam generator, 1 Tefal, 2 Phillips, current one is Tefal. The 2 Phillips ones lasted a fraction of the time of the first Tefal & I wouldn't buy another one. Just my experience of course.

Thank you, all opinions welcome! I'm going to try to pop into JL or Currys over the weekend and see some in the flesh.

Inhaventbhad my Phillips one ling so I can't say if it will die young!

I have this Phillips Perfectcare one. Early days for me but it's great for duvet covers and clothes. Avoid one where you have to buy the anti scale cartridges, this one doesn't need them. I work for JL and they recommend this one to most people.

OctonautsAgain · 27/02/2015 12:41

Thanks Sew, didn't know they did them without cartridges. My dead one had little filter pouch things that were a right pain.

My Phillips one has a "Decalc" function and it won't turn on until you do it. You have to lug it to the sink and tip it sideways until all the muck has poured out. I iron a fair amount every week and I've probably had to do this no more than 3 times in 6 months

I've got a Rowenta Precision Steam jet - had it a few years now and no complaints at all about it (although it is my first so I have nothing to compare it to!). I don't think that model is available anymore but I've been pleased with Rowenta as a brand.
