How old/what is your oldest household electrical ware?

It is known that in good olde days things were built to last forever and now these it is apparently a shocker if things we own last more than 5 years!

My mother in law has a chest freezer that is 36 years old that still works well to this day, 30 year old gas oven, Kenwood standing mixer as wedding gift 38 years ago, etc.

The oldest we have is Bosch hoover - still OK 10 years old after regular use and home renovation abuse (we had filter replaced), but we have been through several house moves so dunno about how good household products can be.

Kenwood stand mixer & Kenwood food processor - both bought with my first ever pay cheque 20 years ago. Both used at least once a week.

Facepaintphobic · 15/02/2015 11:02

23 year old Sony CD player, 25 year old Phillips hand mixer & 18 year old Bosch hand blender. Most other things seem to have been replaced

Mumzy · 15/02/2015 11:04

I have a Panasonic handmixer which is 33 years old

flushingfreda · 15/02/2015 12:33

Miele vacuum cleaner 14 years old never gone wrong still sucks as good as first time

tomandizzymum · 15/02/2015 12:37

1950s radio and a 1970s rotary phone. Both picked up in charity shops for next to nothing! Very happy DH, who hates modern technology.

FillWithWineToActivate · 15/02/2015 14:56

Kenwood Chef Mixer, 34 years and still going strong!

brightwell · 15/02/2015 19:58

My I've had my tefal toastie sandwich for 32 years....toasties were my staple diet when I left home.

JuniperTisane · 15/02/2015 20:01

21 year old tv, was dh's 16th birthday present. We keep waiting fir it to die so we can go and get a big flat smart telly, no sign yer.

ouryve · 15/02/2015 20:10

I don't have anything electrical that I know for sure works that is much older than 12 years old, as I left my ex with everything I could fit in the back of a couple of mates' cars, about 12.5 years ago. I bought my hairdryer, back then. The microwave is about 11.5 years old and the toaster is a proper old fashioned clockwork dualit and about 9 years old. Got fed up of cheap ones blowing up as soon as they were out of warranty. We've replaced the clockwork mechanism in it in the past couple of years and that cost as much as a new toaster would have, but we only had to put a small broken thing into landfill, rather than an entire toaster.

I wish we could do the same with kettles. Lost count of those.

I have DH's grandmother's Kenwood Chef which is a 1960s model so must be knocking on 50 years old! I use it at least once a week and it's tough as old boots. Best bit of kitchen kit I own (and I own a LOT).

Pico2 · 15/02/2015 20:56

Kenwood Chef from the early 1980s, regularly used. TV from 1972, not currently in use.

DramaAlpaca · 15/02/2015 21:04

I have a 26 year old Hotpoint fridge freezer, which is still in perfect working order apart from the auto defrost function which doesn't work so I have to do it manually every so often.

I have my mum's Kenwood Mini which she bought in the 1970s so it must be around 40 years old. I use it regularly.

My Kenwood food processor is 25 years old & still going strong.

My Bosch dishwasher finally broke down after 18 years efficient service and has now been replaced with a new one.

I've had my tumble drier for nearly 18 years as well.

morethanpotatoprints · 15/02/2015 21:15

I have a Kenwood chef c 1950's.
It still has the original ceramic bowl and it was my mums.
I grew up scraping the cake mixture out and it holds so much sentimental value.
I do use it but try not to push it too hard as I'm sure it won't last long if I do.

HermioneGrangerHair · 15/02/2015 21:20

I've got a reconditioned (full working order) 1930s radio, but the oldest appliance with its original innards is a fully functional 1970s sewing machine.

lecherslady · 15/02/2015 21:21

Our microwave was a present from DHs grandma when we got our first house together in 1998.

My mother has just got rid of her microwave from 1985 when she redecorated her kitchen. It was still fully functioning, but just so darned huge! Her new one is not a patch on her old one where you just said you were cooking peas and it would cook them to perfection. How I miss that old microwave!

Lweji · 15/02/2015 21:23

ATM it must be my electric whisk.
I think I bought it 17 or 18 years ago. I don't use it that often, though.

VikingLady · 15/02/2015 21:29

We just worked out that MIL's microwave is 35 years old and going strong! My mum's gave up the ghost last year after 29 years of faithful service.

PigeonPie · 15/02/2015 21:40

Our tumble dryer is a youngster at 14 years old, the Miele vacuum cleaner is 22 years old (was a wedding present) as was the Magimix, and the Kenwood mixer was given to us second hand and must be 40 years old.

rabbit123 · 16/02/2015 09:44

We've recently replaced our vacuum. It was a Sebo from 1992 that we were given when we first moved in together.

My parents upstairs vac is an Electrolux that they bought when they got married in 1978 and until last year, their washing machine was an old 80's Zanussi.

IfMaybeBut · 16/02/2015 09:49

Black and decker sander approx 25 yrs? After that it's probably heated hairbrush thingy which is about 23 yrs old

highlighta · 16/02/2015 10:01

Miele washing machine is 17 years old now still going strong.

My fridge just died, but the matching freezer is still going - also Miele its 30 years old.

I cannot get a vacuum cleaner nor an iron to last longer than 2 years these days.... Now when i am buying an iron, i don't care what the brand is, i just look for those that have a 2 year guarantee and most of the time i have taken them back during the time. Although my Morphy Richards one lasted 2.5 years............. Hmm

rabbit123 · 16/02/2015 10:42

We've had a Philips iron for a good few years now.

Vacuum wise, go for a Sebo or a Miele. They're built like tanks.

EmGee · 16/02/2015 13:16

Bosch washing machine is 14 years old

My parents inherited a Hitachi tv when they moved to a house in 1975. Took it with them on two subsequent moves. Finally bought a new one 5 years ago because the Hitachi was a bit temperamental (and rather large compared to modern day tv's!)

I have an electric hand whisk which belonged to FIL - I've had it for twenty years but I reckon it was bought by MIL: given that they split up in 1979, it is pretty ancient.
