Getting rid of stinky drain smell on shoes

DS (5) managed to step in a puddle for an overflowing drain this morning (school run from hell!) and absolutely stank! I had to wash him in the sinks at school and took his socks, shoes and blazer home to wash as he managed to get the stinky mud all over himself. It's only a drain for sinks but the smell is eye watering and smells like poo.

I've managed to get the smell out of the socks and blazer (plus his coat had some on so that's now in the wash), but the shoes still smell!

I've tried- handwashing (biological liquid and cold water, tea tree oil), rinsing and soaking in disinfectant, spraying with vodka and essential oils (homemade fabreeze thingy) and washing twice in the washing machine. All washes have been cold to avoid setting in the smell and try and avoid killing the shoes.

What can I try next? Would vinegar or ammonia work or would they destroy the shoes? I really don't want to have to buy another pair as they were only bought at October half term. They are still damp so I think he'll probably be going in his trainers again tomorrow.

Have you tried sprinkling in bicarb and leave for a while and then vaccuum away? Could the smell be because it is still damp?

Haven't tried the bicarb yet as they haven't dried out. I'm hoping they'll dry ok then I'll fill with bicarb and hope it gets the last of the stink out.
