Freezer that works in a cold place!

I've only ever had a shed chest freezer before. It finally died, and I don't want another chest freezer so I got an upright one from a friend in the Autumn, stuck it in my shed. Worked perfectly, until the recent cold snap and then I found out that apparently most freezers won't work before 10 degrees centigrade. It just cut out. It's like it's trying to work, but can't quite make it. I tried heating the shed with a small heater, got it well above 10 degrees for a full 24 hours to give it a good chance, but it made no difference. It's like the freezer has got stuck in its mode of only part firing.

So, is there a freezer that WILL work in a garage or shed? Very grateful for any recommendations. Don't want to spend a bomb, and it needs to be upright not chest

bit bonkers to have to run a heater just for a freezer!

Hm, we have run a couple of very old freezers in an uninsulated, detached garage for years with no problems. Have you considered getting an old one on ebay? Then you haven't lost much if it does go kaput, and it might be less sensitive than the newer, more energy efficient models. Would cost a bit more to run, but less than a heater surely!

Beko ones normally work at colder temperatures

AnonymousBird · 09/02/2015 20:08

I know, I've only got the fan heater in there temporarily to see if it makes a difference!! Not a long term option and it's made no difference, so now switched off!

It is a Beko, not a new one, like I say it was £20 from a friend who was getting rid and worked beautifully until the cold snap.

Never occurred to me as being a problem, our old chest freezer had been in there for 20 + years. I may need to reconsider and get a chest freezer again as I gather they are less prone to this issue. Don't like them though!

Thanks posters, for your replies.

Some bekos are marketed at working ok down to -15 degrees or so, so maybe look for one of them

Which says Beko. Essentially, modern fridges and freein the UK are using a better refrigerant - better at everything except working at low ambient temperatures. So you need one using older technology. We used to keep a freezer in the garage, but when it died we looked into it and decided that there really wasnt a good option.

Thank you. Smile

ours is a Beko, and its been in the garage for 4 yrs now. never had any problems. It was advertised as suitable for outbuildings and, as PP wrote, temperatures below freezing

Was coming on to say Beko. I have a second hand fridge freezer in my garage and The freezer does work at less than 10 degrees if I crank the thermostat up to full. Unfortunately, there is only one thermostat so turning it up causes the fridge section to freeze too. Currys have signs on their fridges and freezers telling you if suitable for outbuildings.

Thank you. I am off to our local appliance store then for advice and to check labels for suitability.

When I was looking about 3 years ago the only real option was a beko and that's what we got from asda, it was clearly marked as being one that was suitable for an outbuilding. There were another couple of brands that businesses use but the size/ price made them unviable for domestic use. Hope you have a bit more luck!

As far as I know only Beko are made for putting in a garage - something called Freezer guard technology apparently. Our garage one is Beko and seems fine.
