I have read the book. I was waiting and waiting for a toys section but it never came.....I have a 4yo and a 1yo. Xmas and a recent bday has meant we are actually drowning in plastic tat.

I cannot cope. I chuck and chuck and chuck and it just keeps multiplying....the bits get all mixed up in the wrong boxes....If I put stuff in storage boxes it just gets ignored, and so they play with stuff that is out. We don't have enough space for stuff not to be 'out'.

I need help pleeeeease!!

First start by throwing anything away that is broken. A lot of people do toy rotation, i would sort like with like and that way you will see if you have duplicates and go from there. You can involve the kids as well to a certain extent as they will probably be abke to tell you what their favorites are. Hth.

We had a post birthday / Christmas sort and weeded out the really annoying, duplicates and just no interest. We have a large trunk for the bulky stuff, a couple of large Really Useful Boxes for sets like Duplo, trainset, and vehicles, and another for the small komono-esque stuff like the Happy Meal tat that they do like. The rest sits on shelves. We now seem to be able to inflict some level of tidiness on thd room, and most of it is simple and accessible enough to get the 4 year old involved in timing. We do timer challenges where I set a count down on the tablet and we have to chuck it in the boxes before the buzzer. It's not perfect, but better than it was before Christmas.

ok so toy rotation.....where do I put the ones I'm putting away? There's no where for them to go....I'm so envious when people talk about a "toy chest"...we have enough to fill about 8 toy chests and I hate it!!

I think you need to rationalize what you have , they can only play with one toy at a time.:) I would store the toys not in use in cardboard boxes if you don't have plastic boxes already, don't go and buy extra storage now as you might not need it. You can store the toys not in use in the garage, loft, on top a wardrobe for the time being. When you have sorted out what is really being played with then I would buy proper storage that works for you.

I donated quite a lot to the local charity shop. Then I looked at all the toys/games/jigsaws and packed them better in the storage we already had eg games and jigsaws are now stored vertically in a bookcase. DS' room is much tidier and he is better at tidying toys away as he now knows exactly where each type of toy goes. Figures went into little rucksacks that DS already had.

The only problem I have is the small amount of toys that we store downstairs. I've still experimenting with different types of storage to see what works best as our current 'pretty' storage doesn't stack well so DS can't really use it himself.
