Carpet cleaning! Can't believe what has just came out of my carpets...

So the other day Ddog messed in the house. He is 1 year 5 months now and up until about 7-8 months ago this was a regular occurance- he struggled with the training!

We had our carpets professionally cleaned about 6 months ago and thought that was that, our carpets are grey and I didn't notice much difference in terms of looking cleaner.

But after the dog incident a few days ago (it was though a sprinkler went off in the middle of the living room and sprayed pee everywhere!!) there was no way hands and knees and 1001 cleaner was going to get every bit, so we hired a Rug Doctor.

I don't want to give it back!!! Watching the machine take the most filthy water out from my carpets is the most satisfying thing ever!! Even going over the carpet a second time has still brought out the most minging water!

I need to invest in a carpet cleaner and do this every month!!! Anyone else?

I'm dying to get the building work finished in my house so I can get the vax out ESP as I have a crawler!
V satisfying, but not sure monthly is good for the carpets?

afreshstartplease · 07/02/2015 14:10

Mine never seems to do much

Pretty sure every year to 18 months is sufficient for cleaning carpets. Constantly wetting them on a monthly basis may do more harm than good. And you won't get satisfying amount of muck out if you clean them every month. Save your money and hire a Rugdoctor once every 18 months.

PS Did you know you can use Persil Small and Mighty in them? Much cheaper than RD's detergent.

I think those rug doctor things have some sort of filter that dyes the water black to horrify you into hiring them more often. Or a lot of the black is from the underlay.

I bought a Bissell carpet cleaner last summer. It's so satisfying emptying the dirty water away. Even more so since we've had our puppy! I love it.

QuiteQuietly - definitely not colour from the underlay: I've used them where the underlay is foam and not black at all!

shovetheholly · 09/02/2015 15:04

I agree, it's not the underlay - they really are that disgusting! Sad. It is satisfying when you get the water to run clear, though!

I second the Bissell carpet cleaner if you are going to do it often. It is curiously satisying. I do it once a month (unless we have an accident) and get nicely grey water.

Think I might need to look into it! We're in a flat and doggy muddy paws is always an ongoing issue, even up 3 flights of carpeted stairs! It was just so shocking to see it so filthy, especially when they were professionally cleaned not long ago.

It was cheaper for us to buy the Bissell than to hire a rug doctor twice. Plus less bother with fetching, finding ID, taking it back and having to do the whole house in 24 hours. Plus the Bissell is lighter and more manoeuvrable. DD2 has allergies and DH is not terribly continent, so we get a lot of use out of it.

You can hire a RD online these days. You then just go and collect it, no ID required just the code to the locker which is emailed to you. Advantage is you can book in advance.

Plus if you pay on a credit or debit card instore you no longer need ID. Although not all the retailers supplying RD machines know that, despite the PoS advertising.
